Show Utah should look at updating drug laws It's nice to be back with ail the new changes by Sam Pittman former editor of the Eagle 2002 A D Mike Zahller viewpoint editor Welcome Back! I know it's been a long summer but guess what? It's over and it's time now to shift the focus from parties and bangin' out to homework partying and hangin’ out I've been away for a lung time and I just want to comment on the changes made curing this summer and the effects they may have on us throughout the year I think the first major change had to be the mail boxes and their location Last year getting ones mail was extremely easy all you had to do was visit the side of your dorm halls Now they've moved the mail office into the Student Center For the most part I like this new set up because it allows you the opportunity to discuss your mail needs with an individual Also even if you gave everybody your old address from last year you can still have your mail go to that address so long as you a tell the mail office people about the change and b make sure that your old address is one that was located on campus This doesn't work if you didn't live at CEU last year The only thing I have to say against it is that the office hours don't really coincide with some of the students needs but this is the beginning of the year what do I know? Another change that I think you'll be seeing is one that has occurred because the faculty at CEU has voted unanimously in favor of it This year the forensic program here at the college will be performing a round ofParlimcntary debate for the students in the BBQ pit Competitors will be chosen based on the amount of votes they receive from the forensic squad and the topic will be chosen by the individuals who make CEU what it is Yes you do have a unique voice here on campus so use it If any students feel that an issue needs to be brought to the attention of others all you have to do is submit it to either myself Dean Gundlach or Chris Harper We will then mold a resolution around your issue Finally I want to say that the coolest change the returning student body must face is all the new individuals we'll be seeing on campus I want to be the first returning student to welcome all new students to the College of Eastern Utah It's going to be a great year and I hope you enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed my first year Sid and Mary had been looking forward to this trip for almost four years They had been waiting since that day when Sid came home tickets to the Winter with them a bonus from his company Olympics in Utah It had been a rough winter but not in the financial sense Sid worked in Silicone Valley and pulled down six digits Mary made fifty thousand dollars plus a year as a home health care nurse Their lives were perfect or would be except that Sid had cancer terminal cancer and was only expected to live another two years They tried not to think about it Chemotherapy was moderately successful and thanks to Sid’s medication he was able to function normally free of nausea and loss of appetite The couple spent all the time they could together each knowing but neither speaking the inevitable that they would soon be separated by death That was what this trip had been all about togetherness living at least for a while the lives others did just an other couple on vacation enjoying the winter games Mary was brought out of her reverie by the cold slamming of steel (continued on page 8) Speaking the same language will not take away personal identities To the editor A recent Associated Press article appeared in one of the major newspapers in our state The article was headlined “Opposition mounting on language proposal" The specific language proposal" concerns the prefiled bill which would make English the official language for the conduct of government business in the State of Utah The newspaper article contains a number of misconceptions errors and deliberately misleading statements which need to be corrected After reading the article in the paper I made it my business to obtain an actual copy of the proposed bill so that I might verify exactly what it would make into law Juan Gutierrez a member of the state's Hispanic Advisory Council is quoted as saying: “Our language and our culture are part of our life and we cannot let that go It is very important that we not forget that" Nothing in the bill would require anyone to "give up" his or her language or heritage It would simply require that all official business of the State of Utah and its subdivision be conducted in English It would provide maximum incentive for that person to leant English sufficiently to be able to function as an active member of normal American activities Davis School District Asst Superintendent David Doty is reported to have said that the proposal is vague and confusing and that it prohibit schools from seeking bilingual teachers and discourage speaking parents from being involved in thcirchildren's education Either Mr Doty has not actually read the bill or he is being deliberately misleading There is nothing the bill whatsoever which would prohibit schools from hiring teachers who were non-Engli- sh Jl tlV A My name is Danielle Jensen and I am serving as your student voice also known as the student body president lam rtf'-l- bilingual in any language Indeed the bill specifically provides that (3) Languages other than English may be used: (a) When required by the US Constitution the Utah constitution federal law or federal regulation (b) when public health and safety needs require it (c) in the public and higher education systems according to roles made by the State Board of Education and the State Board of Regents that meet the requirements of Subsection (d) injudicial proceeding when necessary to insure that justice is served (e) to promote tourism and economic development and (0 by libraries when collecting and promoting foreign language services and materials “(4) The State Board of Education and the State Board of Regents shall make roles governing the use of foreign languages in the public and higher education systems that PROMOTE the following principles: (a) the speaking children and adults should become able to read write and understand English as quickly as possible (b) that foreign language instruction SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED (c) that formal and informal programs in English as a second language SHOULD BE INITIATED CONTINUED AND EXPANDED (d) that public schools ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS of children within their system using when necessary a means DESIGNED TO MAXIMIZE UNDERSTANDING while ENCOURAGING those parents who do not speak English to become more proficient in English (Emphasis added) “(7) Nothing in this section affects the ability of government non-Engli- sh employees private businesses nonprofit organizations or private individuals to exercise their rights unden (a) the First Amendment of the United States Constitution or (b) Utah Constitution Article 1 Sections 4 & IS" Doty is further quoted as writing: This type of double-spea- k legislation is a violation of the free speech tights of all school employees" You readers can now read precisely what the bill says Where are anyone's free speech rights impinged upon? As might be expected the Anti Christian Liberties Union oops American Civil Liberties Union entered the fray ACLU Executive Director Carol Gnade is quoted: "We feel the components of this are bigotry and divisiveness rather than unity" Again you can read what the bill says and make up your own mind about just who is being decisive! Hispanic Council Director Lorena Riffo is quoted as stating "This is not a Hispanic issue this is a human issue We' ve all been immigrants at one time or another" True enough but the fact remains that until the last two or three decades previous immigrants HAVE made the effort of learning to speak read and write the English language in order to integrate themselves into US society and both benefit from and contribute to that society Only relatively recently have new immigrants been actually encouraged NOT become unhyphenated Americans By encouraging various groups to maintain identities separate from tire general population it is clear that we are being “Balkanized" so that one group may be played off against another—divide and conquer isthe game Albert Bums ’ Wlren I say activities I do not only butweeanoirdydothiswto VtojusiwatUtybaveroTO ' mean thedancei and soddevUsbut TIease come to the AssocjMed withoul also the classes study groups dorm : denuof CoUegeo- f Eastern jtadycbmmtanenl ftp lapidr Use (ASCEU) room in the Student Activlty'r:'cfreveleadpclassAOTU will V nights plays etc Everything on cam - Utahi pici 111'' sreatar awl bo vdiidftili thatweare &'mTwib 'create our! |
