anticipate for better or worse the beginning of the new school year President Grace S Jones is one person who is very excited for the begin- ning of this year and has been anxiously awaiting the return of students to the campus "Waiting for the students to return is just about as hard as waiting for Santa Claus when I was seven” said the president when describing how she felt about the start of the new year She also mentioned how much she disliked the nearly empty campus over the summer months and her excitement at watching it slowly come back to life with the arrival of students "I came on campus all weekend trying to see how many students we had around" This is Jones' second year as presi dent over the College of Eastern Utah In the past year she has had the chance to get more familiar with the faculty and with the procedures of college operations as well as seeing what campus life is like Jones has even become acquainted with some of CEU’s students Taking all this into consideration Jones has made a few new goals for this year besides carrying over Mime of her goals from last year One of these goals is (he improvement of the quality of student life a continuous goal of the presidents "I look at it as the wholislic development of the student” Jones said This development involves what happens in the classroom what happens between the student and the books and more importantly what happens between the student and the rest of the environment When describing this development Jones said “There's a great deal more that happens in the interaction of the students with the rest of the environment and that's the social peace and then maybe even the spiritual peace” Another goal of the presidents is to increase the enrollment levels She said that numbers are up from last year and believes that we will meet the required enrollment number this year "We’re going to do it" she said As far as projects go the president said that she was pleased at how the development of the new student center was coming along and that they hope to have it completed by June of next year As for the new Aaron Jones dorms she said "I did everything I could but put down the bricks myself" The new dorms should be opened up to students within the next few weeks While discussing these projects the topic of increased fees came up Many students have expressed a concern about the raise and wondered if it had to do with the cost for funding these projects Jones said that it had been two years since either food or housing costs had been raised and they found both needed to be increased Therefore the raise in fees had nothing to do with the building projects President Jones has very high hopes for (his year She mentioned the success that CEU's Forensics team has already had so early in the year as well as the volleyball team and (heir winnings The successes of these “early achievers" excites Jones with the hopes and possibilities of other organiat ior s also succeeding this year President Jones also holds high hopes for the whole student body She believes this year students have a lot of ambition If they get involved with the organizations here on campus and if they participate in activities they will have a better college experience and will more likely succeed On a more professional note President Jones said this “Students welcome to the College of Eastern Utah we arc excited about your presence we arc excited about the possibilities we have here to work together" BOUKflHBESBEEBCRSBfl |
