Show Viewpoint i Rape on our campus? by Renee Pressett student body president My heal i slopped as I read the arlielc on page 3 of the Sun AtIvtH iiic ( March looked like an unimpor-lan- l article because it was riht next lo llie picture of the new y stop sign on ninth north For the rest of the day I could not concentrate and rightfully so There had been a rape on CFl I's campus and no one seemed as outraged as they should be Ilte rape came as a shock because I like many other (Till students had become lulled into a small town security blanket I had forgotten that rape can happen any when no matter where 21 1995) lere are some important all (male and female) that we things need it do to protect ourscl ves and each other A rape will change your lile forever and it's not paranoia to be our chances It lour-wa- you live Rape effects everyone whether you are an actual victim or not As Jackson Rat a recent speaker on campus pul it best rav is something that both men and women should be concerned about I le said a woman is raped in this country every six minutes It is time for all of us male and female lo speak out about rape and violence against women Men need to express lo each other how unacceptable these actions are and protect your female friends from danger If you think that rape isn't a male issue luiw can you look at any of woman in the eye and know that you are not doing everything (hat you can lo piolcd her? A rape is never the victim's fault I cautious Don't leave doors unlocked An unlocked door is like an invitation 2 Once the outside doors are barred at pm leave them that way When you prop the doors open you are in the dorms Don't be afraid to kick (he rock out of the door and make sure it's locked Your friends might not be able to come in hut a rapist won't be able to either I'd say (hat the trade off isn't worth it 3 Don't walk alone and make sure that your friends arc escorted Campus security offers an escort service until I 1 am Call the dispatcher at or security at 234 it's worth the few extra minutes Rapists are most often people the victim knows As Time pointed out "what people think of as ‘really rape' the assault by the monstrous stranger lurking in (lie shadows- - accounts for only one out of five attacks" (June 3 1 1 1 637-162- -- can't imagine any of my male friends being a rapist but I'm sure 1991)1 Casey U’lvin w ho wax raped by one of her classmates at the University of Colorado thought the same way before she was attacked It's easy lo go on with the business of life without letting this "incident" effect you To others the violence in our society scents like an unstoppable engulfing everyone I even fell that writing ah editorial probably wouldn't make a difference because no one would read it We can't change the tragedy that title-wa- ve happened on our campus just a few weeks ago but a good friend pointed out to me that I won't he able to face myself if I sit back in front of my television and allow rape lo become sanctioned practice in our society We all need to take a hard look at ourselves and realize that if were not condemning rape wc'rc condoning it Even if the tide doesn't change it's worth it to be one of those individuals who willing lo make a true commitment Stand and express yourself it is worth it Dropping like flies: it's not the it's the bucks food that kills you by Brittni Coe viewpoint writer If you participate in the daily ritual eating in (Till's cafeteria you have noticed something What could that be? Ixss and less students due lo the cafeteria the students are dmppin like Hies The cafeteria has lost a lot of students on the meal plan in the last two quarters What is (he reason? The expense! Students can't afford lo cat in the cafeteria because they feel they pay for more food than they get Joseph Glorioso CEU's director of student housing said that students pay about $8 a day on the meal plan This is for the two meals daily Can you cut somewhere else for $4 a meal? Indeed you can I did it myself just today Another reason students leave the meal plan is because (hey are not finding (he variety of food they need or like Many a day you will only cat cereal or a turkey sandwich because you do not like the choices offered in the cafeteria Do you really think it costs someone $4 for a piece of bread and some turkey? I think not Many students have expressed the idea of making students pay for what they eat I lowcver this would cost the cafeteria more than the trouble it would he worth The reason CEU's cafeteria is somewhat expensive is because it has lo pay for employees to prepare food do the dishes and serve the food whether you cat it or not Many schools bigger than CEU have found the "pay for what you cat" method effective Of course for some of us we would he paying little lo nothing because that is just about what we cut at the cafeteria Our choice I know BYU has found (hat at the Cougar liats Cafeteria "the pay for what you eat" method is working well They have a lot more variety and make more money than CEU hut they are a bigger school The workers of the cafeteria have a hard job trying to please every member of (lie “elite cafeteria caters" Honestly (hey try lo do their best Hal Wilcock director of the cafeteria tells us that our comments and suggestions arc more than welcome at (he food forum they held recently In the meantime if you ure looking lo lose a little weight I suggest lo get yourself on the meal plan It is a dieter's dream For (lie rest of you on the meal plan good luck Don't be afraid of the others you don' t see eating in (lie cafeteria It wasn't the food that killed them just a couple of bucks Stop relying on government to solve society's problems of the people Or more consider the phenomenal llie actions by David Utvack guest editorial The gang problem continues to cscalaicAmcrica is being contmlled of violcnccthc fastest growing segment of our population living in poverty involves our childrenmorc and more families are by the epidemic living on the streets St ri kc up a conversation with just about anyone concerning current events and the chances are that one of these issues will he the topic of discussion with the question eventually being raised about what can or should he done I recently had the privilege of attending the first annual Governor's Conference on Volunteerism at which I had the opponunity to hear the keynote address hy the ex Governor of Michigan George Romney While I do not agree with Mr Romney's stance on less government participation certain points raised were of extremely great value Therefore I would like lo briefly address one of the four founding principles- discussed during the spccch-thhas made America such a great -- al country Traditionally Americans have dema commitment lo volunteerism and a willingness lo confront society's problems head on Our history exemplifies this tradition For example consider the Civil Rights Movement of the I960 The resulting change was initiated and generated by onstrated locally achievements by the residents of the Glendale community in Salt LakcCity in cleaning up their neighborhood Through the efforts of community numbers kids arc now able to safely play outside without the worries of the drugs and gangs that before had prevented such a normal activity But as Mr Romney so elegantly stressed these examples arc becoming more and more an exception lo the rule and this principle and tradition of greatness is on the verge of extinction In searching for solutions lo our problems we no longer ask what we (lie people can do to help The recent trend instead has been lo first turn to the government for the solutions to our problems Well time has come to shill back lo llie principle that had made us such a great country We must stop relying upon the government to sol vc our problems and begin to mobilize the most valuable resource of all: OURSELVES I cannot emphasize strongly enough that I am in no manner advocating less government involvement for government must maintain a strong commitment lo doing their part in making a difference in our people of this great country start assuming our duties and responsibilities to each other and become more actively involved in solving the problems we now face |
