East director Chafetz is a master print maker who has dedicated his life to creating works of profound social significance The prints featured in “Perpetrators'' are an unsettling examination of the men of the Third Reich who in Chafetz's words “designed and ran the concentration camps directed the armies carried out propaganda programs and by doing so made Hitler's destruction policies a reality" “These prints are stark and cold" said Young “The exhibit confronts the horror of the Holocaust and revives the lesson of this turbulent period of history" Chafetz an American Jew who saw combat during World War II says he wrestled with the Holocaust and how to deal with that experience as an artist The image of each person depicted is accompanied by several lines of biographical text explaining the role they played during the period The biographies are brief matter-of-fastatements that reinforce the cold realities of the Holocaust According to Chafetz the impetus for this project came from his children “I decided to do this project when I realized my own kids who arc in their 30s were unaware of the violence of that period" he ct "Perpetrators" will show through Jan 31 (Photo
