Show Page 4 January 13 1994 °Academic advising main problems facing counseling is that their budget is inadequate and felt they could do a better job if their funding was a higher priority The counselors are forced to work from a very limited supply of resources The idea of advisors being hired for peak advising periods was also discussed The concerns about this suggestion revolved around “who will be hired?" This idea was not well received The most popular solution to the advising problems remained with centralized advising with the counseling office handling all of the advising A great deal of discussion was held on this topic It was noted by some of the faculty members that CEU had tried this before and it had not been successful Powell agreed stating that although it is a very good idea" it presents the problem of the students not getting enough of the right information from a trained professional in their field" Many faculty members voiced the opinion that even a e professional advisor could not be as informed about individual academic programs as could a faculty member in that field The fear of losing touch with the students which could happen if we went to a centralized system was a point often brought up On the other hand they said centralized advising might work for the large group of students who have undeclared majors and want to finish general education requirements to transfer to a four-yeal full-tim- ar college Assigning heavy advising loads to certain faculty members who have a reduced teaching load was another suggestion This might work but we need to hire extra faculty or use more adjunct instructors to cover the teaching load they said The use of rubber stamps by advisors on registration cards and adddrop slips was another idea This would help assure that the students had talked to an advisor before handing in their registration cards It might keep students from forging signatures It was noted that this had in fact been tried before Some people thought it was a good idea while others thought it would be too “bureaucratic" and cumbersome Typical New Year's resolution: (cont from page 3) Also the use of internal assisted advising was discussed As soon as CEU gets “networked" advisors could have access to student records which would expedite advising Curriculum guidelines for each major and information about transfer to the universities could be listed through each computer terminal to be used as checklists for students as they choose their courses Yearly schedules and better scheduling of classes were suggestions made by the faculty The faculty needs to know which classes will be offered for the entire academic year including summer terms Otherwise they have difficulty helping students plan their schedules Powell agrees that there are many difficulties that are sometimes presented by not being sure of what classes will be held all year but she among others remembers when CEU tried this a few years ago and discontinued the yearly schedules because of the large number of changes that had to be made in the winter and I'm going to lose weight exercise and watch my diet spring schedules Powell feels that this solution may not be realistic However the faculty felt that CEU should publish a yearly scheby Jennifer Mecham dule again The quarters each staff writer class is taught should be listed in It starts with Thanksgiving and the catalog ends with New Years but now The faculty felt there should the holidays are over the relabe more cooperation between divitives have gone and you've done sions in the planning schedules just
