City and Dr Geno Saccomanno a leading cancer researcher in Grand Junction Co will receive honorary degrees from the college's commencement exercises June 4 Both men are natives of Carbon County ne from Utah Slate University Dr Saccomanno grew up and attended Carbon High School He first planned to become a teacher and graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology from the University Welch graduated from CEU (then Carbon College) in 1951 He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Utah State University in 1957 and began working for the Utah accounting firm Haskin and Sells In 1961 he was certified as a public accountant He joined the Kearns-TribuCorporation as controller in 1965 He was named general manager in 1976 and was appointed president in 1984 The corporation owns and publishes The Salt Lake Tribune and three other newspapers in Idaho and Nevada ne Welch is also president of the Newspaper Agency Corp a partnership between the Kcams-TribuCorp and the Desert News that prints distributes and handles advertising for both newspapers The company distributes regional issues for USA Today and other publications ne Besides his responsibilities at the two corporations Welch is a member of the board of directors for First Interstate Bank of Utah and Blue Cross Blue Sheild of Utah He is president of the board of trustees of Judge Memorial High School in Salt like City and a trustee for both the University of Utah School of Social Sciences and Westminster College In 1991 he received the “Freedom of Enterprise Award” from the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants and c "Distinguished Service Award” John W Tucker a former presi- dent of College of Eastern Utah and recently retired chancellor at Ptfdue University will deliver the com- mcnccment address to the 1993 graduating class at CEU in Price on June 4 He and another forma CEU President Claude Burtenshaw will also participate in ceremonies to dedicate two residence halls in their of Utah in 1940 Advised to get more education he earned a medical degree at SL Louis University in 1946 and eventually settled in Grand Junction Co There he initiated the practice of pathology at SL Mary's and the Veterans Administration Hospitals He also developed the laboratory services in many Western Colorado and Eastern Utah hospitals including the Price City Hospital where he served as a visiting pathologist for many years As a researcher Saccomanno developed new techniques to collect sample of sputum from the lungs so cancer could be detected earlier than it showed upon a chest and at a stage when it can be successfully treated In the course of his research he developed at extensive cancer research library and database Both are utilized by physiin cians and researchers world-wid- e the search for a cure for cancer The college will honor two members of its 1993 graduating class as Mall Bryncr of Price and Ryan Reid of Farmington Utah will deliver valedictorian addresses at commencement exercises on June 4 Bryncr is the son of Carol and Lynn Bryncr He graduated from Carbon High School in 1983 He worked for several years in his father's construction business and as an auto body repairman before entering the US Navy in 1987 Bryncr was deployed aboard the aircraft carriers USS Constellation and USS Independence His military service took him to several locales in the Pacific including the Philippines Thailand Hong Kong Singapore Pakistan and Australia He also participated in Operation Desert Shield before being discharged as a second class petty officer in 1991 of Paul and Peggy Reid of Farmington When he graduated with high honors from Davis High School in 1992 he had earned enough college credit through nced-placement courses to eliminate one year of higher education He attended CEU on a Presidential Scholarship and was an active participant of the forensics program earning a silver award in debate at the Phi Ro Phi National Tournament earlier this quarter Reid also played synthesizer for the CEU band He was nominated as the Outstanding Freshman Student and received a departmental award in English Reid will receive his associate's degree with an emphasis in English at the commencement exercises He will pursue a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Utah this fall He plans to teach English level at the adva- Saccomanno
