Is our complacency toward fault Their major contention is that the environment itself with vegethe environment a result of our geographic location? Do we not know tation decay and volcanic eruptions are responsible for the majority of how to act environmentally? pollution in the atmosphere What they fail to realize is that the human contribution to pollution is what is pushing the natural cycle Living in Utah is a great experience for those of us who claim to have a connectedness with nature In the time it takes to drive an hour over the brink The environment cannot and will not handle our conwe can find ourselves in some of the most beautiful "environment” tribution of pollution There is no doubt that the Earth will survive this country has to offer It is my contention that our easy access to What we need to be concerned with is whether or not we want to be the beauty of nature is the reason for our lack of environmental action a part of the future The environment will prove Darwin conent when it This is difficult for me to understand We have a connection with naslowly kills off the human race ture that people in big cities and overdeveloped states lack We should The biggest things that we can do in our every day life are very be the ones fighting the hardest to protect thst which we so readily ensimple Buy recycled paper and other recycled products Taking joy things lo be recycled is only the first step There is a huge glut in the Hopefully we aren't going to have to wait until Earth Day comes recycled paper market right now No one is buying recycled paper again next year We need to be concerned with our contribution to enNext buy environmentally friendly products Look on product vironmental destruction on a daily basis If we are going to start labels for chlorofluorocaitons or CFCs and chlorine propellents or showing some concern for the environment we need to have some diCIO's These two chemical structures pose the greatest threat to our rection ozone cover Also avoid products that have excessive packaging When I was a "novice environmentalist” I paid my money and beThis also includes buying food from restaurants that use paper instead came a member of the Greenpeace organization Now my money is of Styrofoam and large quantities of plastic Buy and eat more vegetabeing spent to sail the Rainbow Warrior across the seas in an attempt bles and fruit Eating beef causes rainforests to be cut down it also to stop nuclear testing and whale slaughtering These are ideas and acmandates greater consumption of water to feed these bovine creatures tions that I support but they seem to be having little effect on my Lastly realize that everything you buy and discard has an effect on life in Utah Leant from my mistake and focus your primary inthe environment in some way Keep these things in mind as you go volvement on Utah environmental problems by joining or supporting forward into the world Our environment is very fragile and its surlocal environmental groups vival is dependent upon our actions Another step that many of us can take as college students inActing with concern for the environment does not make you a volves our Constitutional right to vote First it is imperative that we granola eating radical This seems to be one of the maregister to vote Second become involved in the primary elections jor problems opponents of the environmental movement have This Dr Shampel tells his Political Science classes that the primaries are ideology is whk will need to be environmentally minded Our governto you listen to Kermil the Frog and the Alaskan debate team when ment both state and federal are the biggest culprits in the environmen they tell us "It's not easy being green” tree-huggi- ng The long and winding roads of truth by Matthew llarward staff writer I was sitting in Hie Milky Way the other day talking with a friend Imagine the scene: An atheist and a believer in God talking about religion and the purpose of life What for some could have been an situation turned out to be an enlightening experience She mentioned that she didn't like to talk about her atheism with believers because she knew how comforting religious belief is and that die didn't want to ruin that for people or make them question I really reargu-menti- ve spected that I realized though that questioning one's beliefs can lead to wonderful human discoveries that improve our lives It led me to think of why I'm here in college We come to learn to grow and increase our knowledge and intellects When one enters the BYU grounds they see a message that reads "The world is our campus” Here especially at CEU we are engaged in general education We learn from all disciplines of study: arts music science etc But unfortunately our educations are hindered by personal dogmas that ystop intellectual growth I see the ”I'm right your wrong syndrome I'm a firm believer that healthy argument fosters learning but it sometimes goes too far College is not meant to be a battle ground of the right vs the left let our "wonderful” national congress do that it is meant lo be a place of learning We must debate bltt we cannot afford to ta our own hang-up- s and dogmai stop our growth Ill tell you 1 why Believe me I know because dogma used to be my middle name There are few constants in this world Obviously we know we were bom at some time we see that we exist and we realize that someday we will die Other than these realities there are few more that we can safely judge as "truth" or "fact" Everything else borders on the speculative mid can never be taken for face value and should be decided upon after extensive study and thought There are no such things as absolutes To find our definitives we should be willing to gather from the many possibilities and philosophies We can then add them together to create a potpourri of understanding Take for instance religion Man has always searched for answers to life's questions especially concerning hummi creation and purpose all in an effort to find a personal identity Finding happiness is a common goal worldwide To find this fulfillment people have developed the many different religions with their respective superstitions and traditions to fit their needs People are so vastly different and since religion is based on personal faith there can be no absolutes in religion Personally we may feel we have found the true form of spiritual worship but for mankind collectively it would be presumptuous to declare it as the total "complete" This type of thinking has a long record of failure Anyone remember the QusadeS? Now whether the inspiration behind all this can be traced to one (contlaacdoap3) "gag “j rooms & higher tuition Overcrowded classrooms increased workloads and higher tuition fees may all be in the future for Utah's community colleges A lack of funding resulting firm the 1992 budget has farced the Utah Board of Regents to take action that may produce these undesirable effects in Utah schools One measure instituted by the Regents to combat the funding shortage is an increase in tuition for students The increase is expected to raise funding for about 1000 additional students Another of the measures being considered involves adopting stricter standards allowing only the most prepared students to enter the State's universities Higher benchmarks for GPA ACT and SAT may be required in the future High school requirements will probably be increased It is hoped that higher entrance standards will force more students into community colleges for their initial two years of general education study According to Tom Davies president of the American Federation of Teacher Utah College Council "Students can receive their education at the community college level for two instthirds the cost of a four-yeitution" Davies expressed concerns however "We are concerned that pushing the growth into community colleges given the past history of underfunding may escalate cnnvdod classes increase worke loads and the number of faculty We cannot allow the quality of education at community colleges to be compromised further" non-reside- nt ar part-tim- CEU honors governor Governor Bangerter will be at the CEU campus on May S to receive an award for this award for his support of state college libraries The State Library Board will present the governor the award during their moeting at 12:30 pm in the Computer Business Building Bangerter has received recognition for his support of state library construction at the college and university level Over one million dollars was Hotted to the GEU library as part of this program This money will be used to increase the library's volume for better diversity in covering student's needs |
