Show TheEagleyolumelXVINumberj Justice Piacitelli and Anderson to head ASCEU helm for TomMartin staff writer This year's elections at the College of Eastern Utah featured a race for competitive four-wa- y student body president in addition to other aggressive campaigns The candidates coming out on top were Mark Justice as student body president Jeff Piacitelli as academics vice president and Eric Anderson as activities vice president Justice is from Castlcdaie Ul and is the oldest of seven children He graduated from Emery High School in 1989 He competes on CElTs debate team and is majoring in business Justice owns and operates his own business a baseball card shop at 145 West Main in Price He plans on opening another shop in Provo in the near future Justice enjoys spots and reading "I always planned on running" he said I would like to thank all the people who helped with my campaign especially those who gave moral support” said Justice Piacitelli has lived in Price most of his life and comes third in a family with five children He graduated from Caibon High in 1988 He is interested in studying medicine and is a liberal aits major In his spare time Piacitelli reads and travels to Moab where he teaches a repelling seminar Piacitelli said he ran because he feels qualified to do the job "I got a kick out of running” said Piacitelli "But even more I look forward to next year's potential for growth at CEU" Anderson is also a Price native 92-9- 3 and is the second oldest of eight children He graduated from Carbon High in 1990 Anderson also graduated from the Defensive Language Institute in Monterey Ca with a certificate of proficiency in Russian and from the US Army Intelligence School as a Russian interrogator Anderson is a member of CElTs debate team and is currently majoring in accounting Anderson's hobbies include reading running and playing "It was a lot of fun campaigning with Jeff” Anderson said He and PiaceteUi played Wayne and Gaith in a Wayne's World skit during part of their campaign speech ”1 think I won because of and in spite of my girlfriend Soni Marshall” Entrepreneurship discussed by Jefferson Institute President David W Tippets will lecture on "Entrepreneurship in the International Market" on Tuesday May 12 at 1 1 am in the Little Theatre The event is sponsored by the Business Department of CEU David W Tippets is the PrcsidentDiiector of Product and Curriculum Development for the Jefferson Institute The Jefferson Institute is recognized as the finest business education training pro gram in the country Their Young American's Success Program has received international publicity As the institutes' Director of Research and Development Tippets negotiated and produced a training seminar for the foroner USS JL This program is bring- - ing Russian entrepreneurs into the free market system Tippets served as the editor of (continued on page 3) Space program helps economy by Jamison Brown staff writer Utah Senator Jaka Gam "To an old pilot flying in space is the ultimate feeling a pilot could experience” Utah Senator Jake Gam said at CElTs Speakers Fonun April 20 Gam is concerned with the space program and believes that one percent of the $13 billion of the national budget is not enough It will probably be cut but Gam believes that it should be increased "From every dollar spent on the space program we make $7 or $8 in the private sector" he added Over 10JXX) medical devices and procedures have resulted from studies completed in space Pacemakers implantable insulin pumps and velcro were all invented because of space exploration 'There wiU be incredible inventions to improve the standard of living and most environmental problems will be solved from space” Garn stressed People who complain about the money spent on the space program are uninformed "I did not take a wallet or credit card in space” he chuckled "there is nothing to buy out there” The money is spent on (continued on page S) Earth MM Into office ASCEtre Miff abend etude body prMtdenl Mrt Juafee b ImmedMey following Me Mnouneemnl ae whner Ipho by Paul ML Governor hopeful campaigns at CEU by Stephanie Jarvl staff writer Democratic candidate for governor Pat Shea made a visit to the campus of College of Eastern Utah during his recent three day tour of southeastern Utah The ion landing Najkui Commiteeman of the Utah State Democratic Committee and former chairman of the party entered the race for governor early in February and has taken extensive trips to all ports of Utah to learn more about rural areas Shea's interest in higher education was expressed when speaking with President Michael Petersen One of his key concerns is the small amount of appropriated funding for our research facilities When it comes to programs facilitated by the small colleges in the state he feels that is smart right now to ”make what we have now work because we can't move forward until that happens” Shea 44 said he'll campaign on issues similar to his opponents such as education health care refenn economic development and environmental protection Other candidates in the gubenatorial race ire Mike Leavitt Mike Stewart and Richard Eyre on the Republican ballot: Stuart Hanson Jr on the Democratic ticket and Merrill Cook running independent In speaking with Shea about the school itself he recalled winning his first debate tournament at the CEU Invitational high school meet in 1965 while debating for Highland High He said that it wasn't surprising that our own debate team is ranked nationally after watching the college run the 1965 tournament When speaking of the current learn he staled that "the intellectual rigor of debate facilitates good thinking" and he enjoyed the competition very much This has carried on to his pursuit for the scat of governor Shea can be heard airing his views in an upcoming speakers forum which he will be sharing with Senator Mike Dmitrich on May 27 at noon |
