Blue Leaves" to be presented by the College of Eastern Utah Theatre Department March 8 9 andlO at 7:30 pm in the Geary The winner of the 1971 Critics Award and an Obie Award as Best American Play "House of Blue Leaves" written by John Guare in the waning years of the Vietnam mixture of War is a bitter-swewhimsical characters and crazy situations "House of Blue Leaves" is comedy about some heavy themes explained Lee Johnson director of the production "It is an irreverent look at life in the 60s and nothing is taboo" he said The cast is comprised of CEU students and community actors and actresses Dan Hall portrays Artie Gary Howe is his son Ronnie Bananas is played by Traci Jeffs Bunny is played by Julie Taylor Corrina by Anna McCourt Billy by Todd Devenish the Head Nun by Jill Wagoner the Second Nun Kristie Rodgers the Little Nun Kristin Greenwood MP Jim Wilcock and the Man in White Mike Kaminiski Wilcock is also the stage manager for the production et Musical talents continue Simone and Harvey earn CEU’s Distinguished Alumni Awards Two College of Eastern Utah alumni were given the Distinguished CEU Alumni Award for their outstanding accomplishments in the field of music Jim Simone Union High School music teacher received the band award and Michelle Powell Harvey who sings with the Utah Opera received the choir award Simone has taught high school music for seven years During the last six years in Roosevelt he has reestablished a marching band and many of his students have excelled in regional and state competitions The band has performed at several different festivals and parades throughout the slate including the Days of '47 Parade held in Salt Lake City Simone is a graduate of Carbon High School where he wu named Region Six Outstanding Brass Soloist and received his Muter Musicianship Award during his senior year While majoring in Music Education at CEU in 1979 Simone wu named Outstanding Band Student and in 1980 he wu named Outstanding Choir Student He wu also included in the "International Youth in Achievement" publication in 1981 He graduated with honors from CEU then continued at Utah State University where he wu involved in the USU marching band pep band symphonic band orchestra jazz band and choral In 1983 he graduated with honors in psychology music and he mirrored in French well He is married to the former Chcrylecn McKay Provo Currently he is pursuing an Endorsement in School Counseling Harvey who has received the Distinguished Alumni Award in choir is presently singing with the Utah Opera Company She hu performed in several productions including Carmen Madame Butterfly La boheme Pagliacci and The Magic Flute She will also be in Don Giovanni which will premier on May 17 In addition to her regular performances Harvey also performs with a smaller group in an opera schools program She travels to elementary jr highs and high schools throughout Utah singing for the students She the mother and grandmother in the one-aplays different roles such opera Little Red Ridinghood She is also an alveoli Celia in Harry Quit Smoking During her career she hu been in over 60 theatrical productions assembly-base- d Harvey hu also written and directed a for the Lake Salt Fire Department During the put 2 years safety program the show hu been taken to 73 elementary schools and leads the nation in fire safety programs she said She hu also been named Salt Lake County's Most Vital Volunteer for her efforts "The other big thing in my life" Harvey said "is I'm a professional down" She is the vice president of Clown Alley which hu 130 members in Salt Lake City She hu written and published several safety songs including "Fire is a Tool" "I've Got Your Number" and "The Smoke Alarm Song" While at CEU Harvey performed in each theater department production and played the lead role in several performances While a freshman she wu given the CEU Most Outstanding Woman Award She wu also honored Outstanding Theatre Arts Student She graduated from CEU in 1977 then continued at Brigham Young University where she graduated bi 1979 She is married to Carr A Harvey and they have two children Meghan and Alcxys The blues won four awards The all categories Wednesday night winning in which she wu nominated Record and Song of the Year honors went to Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings" Her song also won the songwriters' award for Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar whose number was used in the film "Beaches" It won Record of the Year for Midler Former Beatle Paul McCartney wu given a Lifetime Achievement Award to a standing ovation The Beatles were the "best band in the world" McCartney said 2I've'got to take this opportunity now that I've got this award to thank John George and Ringo for being beautiful
