how rehearsals go" it is this spontaneous variety that keeps Carolyn Gwythcr Musical Dance Company director on her toes during rehearsals The company's 1990 production on March 17 will be "A Salute to Broadway" The show will provide an extreme range of dancing with many borrowed pieces from famous musicals Gwythcr hu planned several numbers with featured alumni well the Musical Dance Company cut of one u u itself f£S! v- - t pl "This production gives students a chance that they may not have had otherwise to perform the most select pieces from Broadway" Gwythcr said This year the com- pany's production hu also taken the place of a musical since one wu not scheduled by the theater department The Musical Dance Company wu formed lut year and according to its director hu really come a long way The company now includes eight men and 16 women all of whom are cast members in "A Salute to Broadway" Gwythcr enjoys working with the Musical Dance Company especially with the "neat mix this year" Not just dance majors are involved but a wide variety of talented students that add to the spontaneity of the rou- tines Some of the group numbers include the opening piece "We've Got Magic to Do" from Pippin "Skimblcshanks" from Cals' from Oklahoma1 "One Rock and Roll Too Many" from Starlight Expresr and the finale number "One" (singular sensation) from A "Hoe-dow- V ‘ Rehearsing for tho oponing number In "A Salute to Broadway" Musical Danes Company mambara Stava West Jaff Jordan Melissa Steadman and Lisa Payne dance to "We've Photo by Stephanie Matvidikis Got Magic To Do" n" Chorus Line Other numbers have been selected from Little Shop of Horrors Crease West Side Story and many more Broadway favorites Many distinguished alumni will be bringing something of their own to perform They include: Stephanie Blake who hu recently completed her role in "Evita" at Utah State Rebecca Hess who works in the children's theater at the U Brett Larsen who just finished his role in a play at BYU Todd Olsen who is currently working on his muters in English literature and speech and drama at the U Corey Ewan who hu his theater muters from BYU and Trevor Olsen who is a member of the U Actors' Training Program Local alums in the Broadway production include: Claudia Bigler who teaches music at Carbon High School Judge Boyd Bunncl who ap- pears daily at the seventh district court and CEU Dean of Student Life Jay Andrus They win be joined by Karen and Phil Peterson Tracy Doimelson and Stephanie Bracken According to Gwythcr these ve the alumni participating so far and a few always remember to call her about performing a few nights before the grand event Gwythcr is accustomed to these uncertainties though with the night before performance being the first time the whole cut can usem- ble for dreu rehearsal Of course the Musical Dance Company members who practice twice each week know their parts but plugging in all the alumni can get tricky "A Salute lo Broadway" will be Utah Wilderness Association Poetry Review She earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin and hu studied abroad at the University of Valencia Valencia Spain She is presently working towards her Mulct's Degree through Utah State University n given a presentation for the League of Utah Writers Price Chapter dealing with her translation of Garcia Urea's poetry related to Spanish culture and the bullfight Coles hu received several awards for her work including the 1990 Individual Writer's Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts In 1987 she won first place in the Serious Poetry and second in Poetry on a Single theme Utah Arts Council Original Writing u Katie Kingston-Thompso- n has Competition Katherine Coles Her poetry publications include The New Republic Shenandoah The Georgia Review and Quarterly West Her Fiction is to be published in The North American Review and The Alaska Quarterly She hu given readings throughout the United Slates
