Show The Eagle-pag- e Thursday 2 by Jake Shewmake editor 1989-9- 0 Aren't people strange? We all go through life without even knowing when we arc experiencing the most important events of our lives and we often take them for granted Sometimes we seem to get complacent and stop working towards our goals without even realizing how much we will regret it when we get older We often waste a day not realizing that the wasted days arc the ones we will never be able to recall Another class of CEU graduates are about to end their experience and make their mark on the world Some will go on to other institutions while others join the work force But one thing is sum they will all be better people because of their college experience They have all reached one of their many goals and this will encourage them to set higher and tougher goals They have all sacrificed and labored hard and now they are about to be rewarded This graduation may seem to them like just another part 1 it is an important milestone in each that I can follow in all of your footsteps and graduate would also like to thank all of you who helped me make it year and on behalf of the freshman class thank you for all hope next year through the of the help you have given me this year I would like to personally thank the ASCEU officers on making this year a great one All of the activities were great and everything seemed to flow smoothly I would also like to thank the sophomores on the 1989 baseball team You taught me a lot about baseball but more importantly a lot about life I would like to express a special thanks to Lee Mathic who is the editor of The Eagle for showing me the ropes and being a great I friend would like to congratulate all the 1989 graduates of CEU and wish them good luck in all of their endeavors 1 hope that you will take your experience and knowledge out into the world and make it a better place I Discrimination at CEU by Jake Shewmake Editor 1989-9- 0 At the College of Eastern Utah there is a discrimination problem I'm not talking about the KKK or the Nazis I'm talking about the oldest kind of discrimination known to man: the discrimination against women In the CEU cafeteria there is a definite problem The problem is that the women arc paying the same amount for a meal plan as the men and arc almost surely not eating the same amount You might think to yourself that it isn't fair to sell the meal for a lower price than men but that is not what I'm women plans to proposing What I am proposing is a new system to keep track of the student who is on the meal plan which is much like the system used at Weber State College In the WSC a computer lists all of the students names who arc on the meal plan and the amount of money the student has in hisher account As the student goes through the register the person working the computer deducts the cost of the meal from the student's account An obvious problem with the new system is the possibility of a student not having enough money to cover hisher meals for the quarter in his or her account I think that if there was a minimum balance of about $300 per quarter the problem would be resolved If a student had some money left over in hisher account hcshc could carry it over into the next quarter and in the case of the student checking out of school the money could be refunded Besides eliminating the problem of discrimination this system could solve a lot of other problems that occur in tlic cafeteria For example when a student purchases the 10 meal plan hcshc must cal those 10 meals between Monday and Friday If they don't cat on these days they arc not allowed carry over the unused meals to the weekend With the new system you can cat meals on any day of the week On the same note there is a problem with the limes that a student can cat hisher meals Breakfast is served from 6:4S to 7:45 am lunch from 1 1:30 am to 1 pm and dinner from 5 to 6 pm With the busy life a college student leads hcshc may be forced to forfeit a meal because hcshc is too busy to cat at those times Another problem with the current system is the rule that the students on the meal plan can't eat at the snack bar unless they pay cash when they purchase their food The new system would allow students to deduct the cost of snack bar food from their accounts I am proposing this system to the administration and hope that they will take it into consideration I feel that Hal Wilcock has done an excellent iob this year Mr Wilcock was named the Outstanding Staff Member for the 1988-8- 9 school year I'm not trying to create any hard feelings I'm simply trying to improve the food service for CEU students Something definitely needs to be done Mission needs help by Jake Shewmake Editor MMMMle News Editor Feature Editor Entertainment Editor Women's Sports Editor Men's Sports Co-Edito- rs Reporters actually live in the area with us? If you did know they were close by and you could help them would you? Now is your chance In- spired by a speech given by James Lauritscn who is a student at the College of Eastern Utah two other students Jake Shewmake and Kristie Eliason arc starting a clothing and canned food drive for the Union Gospel Mission in Helper The mission located at 178 So Main provides lodging 1989 Sex education Farewell to class of 1989 of life they arc going through but of their lives May 25 for families single people married couples and tourists whose cars have broken down on the freeway There arc currently only three people staying at the mission however there have been as many as 20 "The mission is open 24 hours If you need help or a ride call 8 and someone will come pick you up" said Ed Abel a volunteer at lire mission Abel added "In die winter we usually have a lot more people with families but right now we get a lot of tourists whose cars have broken down" 472-331- The mission accepts (continued on page 4) should be taught in school by Spencer Snow guest columnist Important studies have been done to verify the need for more educational services on sex and broadening the understanding of today's teens Can this be done through a better more extensive sex education program in schools or should it be left up to the parents of the teens? Most of today's teens act impulsively in most unfamiliar situations which they do not have a lot of experience Yet in speaking with many young kids it is my hypothesis that most young teens at the high school level have never been taught by (heir parent much if anything about sex This has become a major problem especially in Carbon and Emery Counties where the teen pregnancy is an overwhelmingly large number In the US there arc approximately 12 million teens that arc sexually active Most of these become sexually active seeking some kind of birth control According to Planned Parenthood 11 million teens become pregnant each year and 80 percent of these arc unintended pregnancies Another fact is that half of these teens obtain an abortion which arc even more dangerous than those abortions given to adults This leaves the other half to have their children and 70 percent of them who keep their babies remain unmarried This problem is not just a family problem but it effects us all More limes than not the teens drop out of school and go on welfare Many of them qualify for other programs such as AFDC Food Stamps and public assistance These programs are paid for through our tax dollars and therefore it is a problem that we all need to consider Many times strong religious beliefs can influence students against irrational sexual behavior However just giving lip service to these values without backing them up with solutions can actually make the problem worse It is my opinion that we need to implement some professionally organized way of teaching the teens the facts in school and take much of the burden off the parents |
