Show Torgerson named new vice president by Denise Kabonic Eagle Editor Bob Torgerson was named academic vice president of the College of Eastern Utah by CEU’s Institutional Council in March after serving as acting vice president since January Torgerson began teaching science courses at the college in 1967 and since then has become the chairman of the CEU’s Division of Science and Technology in 198S chairman of the computer science and “We arc determined to maintain a quality operation at this school even though we are facing lough times budget wise” Torgerson said MI feel we have an extremely dedicated faculty" he continued "and this dedication and strength will sec us through those tough times" Within the next year Torgerson explained we will sec new opportunities for training with each one by feedback but this has been and a recent development In the past they used "product writing" where the teacher tells you what she wants you write it once and hand it in Most of the older students never learned the progress of writing “Wc teach the progress approach and that's why wc have the reading and writing lab" Mrs Allison said Renee Brown who is minoring in English mentioned that they help the handicapped special problems and English as a second language student This is where she finds the most improvement with one-on-o- ne teaching “The lab’s main purpose is to supplement the developmental courses or the remedial students” added Mary llcllcn Powell academic advisement director She hopes to computerize the ub in the future to better meet the needs of all students using the lab The lab is free to CEU students and is funded from the English tutoring budget About 60 students came into the lab winter quarter and a few more arc hoped for spring quarter
