Show a Published by the students of the College of Eastern Utah ifiCMEQIinil 'f I Another tuition increase for higher education by GusJMagann As the 1987-8- 8 school year winds down many of the students at the College of Eastern Utah arc looking forward to the summer that is just around the comer A big drawback to summer vacations however is that many students are forced to hold summer jobs in order to pay for another year of schooling You better plan to make more money this summer because if you plan to attend CEU next fall or any other public state institution of higher education in Utah for that matter you will pay an extra six percent union So plan on working extra hard because the cost to attend college continues to rise Despite having one of the smallest squads competing College of Eastern Utah's Forensics team managed to capture the third place bronze sweepstakes trophy at the Phi Rho Pi Region III forensics tournament at Utah Valley Community College March 5 According to Coach Neil Warren the team added another 12 trophies to their collection bringing the total to 80 CEU's Bill Bryner was not only the school's top performer he also placed higher than any other speaker at the three day tournament receiving First place honors in LincolnDouglas Debate and Extemporaneous second place in Communication Analysis and third place in Impromptu speaking Catherine Bonomo won Region Champ distinction with a first place trophy in Informative speaking and also received second place in Communication Analysis Along with Melissa Jewell Maria Walz and Kenneth Muir Bonomo shared the third place trophy for Reader's Theatre Melissa Jewell walked away with the second place hardware for poetry and third place in Communication Analysis while Marta Walz won third place in Speaking to Entertain Billy Thomas rounded out the trophy count with a third place in LincolrVDouglas Debate The team gets a short coming National Phi Rho Pi breather to prepare for the up- Toumament in April Warren says he expects good things from his squad "It's another excellent team this year We have consistently placed high in every tournament we've participated in and that includes some big ones with power-hous- e competition" Warren said "I expect we will show sane of those bigger schools from back east just how talented we really are" he added with a smile All Utah state colleges will increase their tuition and fees for the 88-8- 9 school year with an exception of CEU which is raising tuition but not fees By not raising fees CEU will be the least expensive of the state colleges and universities to attend A student attending CEU at the present taking a full load of IS credits is paying $292 a quarter fa tuition and fees The cost to attend CEU in the fall of 88 will be $305 The next least expensive college would be Snow College which will cost $307 in the fall of 88 The most expensive state college to attend next fall will be the University of Utah which will raise its costs to $548 a quarter The cost of all other state colleges will fall somewhere in between the U of U and CEU Originally the increase was instituted as five percent But when the Utah Student Association (consisting of student body presidents from all of the colleges and universities in Utah) asked for two percent of the budget to go to library allocations the amount of the increase was raised to six percent The association agreed to the one percent increase in exchange for the two percent to go to the libraries The college presidents later shot down the two percent library allocations at the meeting yet kept the one percent increase that was bargained for Instead the money was put in the general fund So if you are planning on attending college in Utah next fall no matter which state college you can expect to put more of your summer earnings toward your education Television courses offered Noting that thousands of new students seek access to Utah colleges and universities every year the Utah State Board of Regents recently voted to allow all nine public colleges and universities to offer courses on television statewide as one means of preserving access "We are at the very beginof ning a long creativity test" said Wm Rolfe Kerr Utah Commissioner of Higher Education "Over the next 20 yean the State Board of Regents will be challenged to undertake every possible innovation to make a Utah higher education available to all the students who seek access Our recentj action is one of many efforts that will be made to keep the doors to a higher education open" Regents voted to make an exception to the Utah Higher Education Master Plan regarding each college or university's geographic scrvicearea so television courses from one institution will be available to students all over the state Without the policy exception approved recently courses could (continued on page 2) |
