Show Optimistic 2nd half should boost record by Lee Mathie staff writer The outlook for the men's basketball team at CEU is looking good "Our team has been playing well said coach Ronnie Stubbs MI think they haven't reached their full potential and they know that but we’re playing well as a team" The team's past three games were played against College of Southern Idaho Treasure Valley Community College and Colorado Northwestern Community College The Eagles won two of the three games The game played against CSI was a tough game because College of Southern Idaho is usually nationally ranked and a tough team to beat They are the defending national champs from last year Defensively they are big they jump well they're well coached and to beat than coach Stubbs said you have to play almost a perfect game "I think the reason we lost" Stubbs said "is because of the rebounding CSI CEU by 20 rebounds Another factor that contributed to CSI's win was CEU's free throw shooting which was 20 outof35 CSI didn't shoot any better but when they did shoot and missed CEU didn't get the rebound Because of that CEU was beaten when they could have easily won the game by three or four points In the game against CSI coach Stubbs felt that there were a few players that played well and a few that could have played better William Allen had 17 points and 5 rebounds "He played pretty good defense but they were dropping down on him so it makes it kind of hard when you have two or three people hanging on your shoulders when you're trying to shoot" Stubbs added "Ingo Wolf played excellent not for the First time but he is playing better than he has played in awhile" Stubbs added He had 17 points 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots Leonard Langdon outre-bound- Coach Ronnlo Stubba dlacuaaaa dalanalvlo atratagy aa CEU Uatana playtra Tom Cook and Darran Stuart I Hall of Fame to induct outstanding alumni By Gus Magann 1984 however there was no Sports Editor sight selected to honor the athletes A Hall of Fame will soon be constructed in the foyer of the Bunnell Dimitrich Athletic Center with plaques to The College of Eastern Utah's Athletic Department will select four new inductees including the First woman indue tee into the Athletic flail of Fame A committee is pre25-3sently narrowing down 0 candidates consisting of a wide variety of age groups The new inductees will be honored at the Founders Day Banquet on February 20 in the Student Activity Center Alumni Room Nine athletes were selected into the Hail of Fame in honor each inductee The college will continue to select three to four new inductees each year and honor them during the annual Founders Day Dinner ed played well with 11 points and 3 rebounds Kelvin Lee had 14 points and Stubbs said he could have played better He missed a couple of easy shots and turned the ball over too much "Sometimes they try to do too much and get caught up in turning the bail over" Stubbs said As a team everybody contributed support The Treasure Valley game was a good game as a team for CEU With six players in double Figures the Eagles knew they had to win that game to stay alive in the playoffs Treasure Valley had a lot of good athletes but CEU really got down and played well and executed well Coach Stubbs felt that some players played exceptionally well in this game William Allen had an good game with 25 points 10 rebounds and 5 for 6 at the free throw line Most important is that Allen is beginning to play defense and becoming an player Coach Stubbs said "If he can continue to do the things that he is doing well he will have a good opportunity to get a top notch education at a university somewhere in the United States and play some mqjor college balL" Tom Cook played well in the Treasure Valley game with 16 points 3 rebounds 6 for 9 from the Field and 3 for 4 at the free throw line all-arou- nd all-arou- nd Playing strong for the Eagles was Gary Holman with 12 points Ralph McKinney has 11 points as point guard playing along side Kelvin Lee who had an good game with 15 points In the Final game against CNCC there were seven Eagles with double Figure scores William Allen had 23 points Nelson Stewart with 15 Tom Cook had 1 1 Gary Holman with 10 Ingo Wolf had 10 Ralph Mckinney 17 points and Kelvin Lee with 19 The Eagles racked the score up to 112 beating CNCC by 21 "It looks like we're 2 out of 3 in the new year" coach Stubbs said "Well really with the alumni game 3 out of 4 you always count your wins and forget about your losses I think the team is on the upbeat and feel condFident about the playoffs he added" all-arou- nd |
