Show THE Page Tiro GOLDEN EAGLE True Science and True Religion By Loran J Barnes There is no real conflict pattern although the whole be- tween science and religion Religion and science conflict only when either or both are without the bounds of truth But who can say which is truth and which is merely an idea A man is given Ms choice to choose his beliefs and folow them but if a person states his beliefs and opinions without study and thinking he docs himself a great injustice Some people believe that God is merely a force or in some and has no cases control over the destiny of man as mortals nor is there any real punishment for those who transgress His laws These people believe that there are no bounds as to what men may do because one can do as he pleases Some believe that the Genesis account of the creation is something designed to satisfy the questions of simpletons that the Bible is a good story but is not applicable to life They believe there is no scientific proof for the Bible that God did not create man in his image and that man is the creature of the highest order in the universe Other people profess atheism and would remove all moral bounds from themselves open-minde- d non-existe- nt Perhaps we should take a closlook at the idea the world came about by chance some odd eons of time ago Some time in the far distant past conditions were just right for a cosmic joining of elements and the swirling together of materials to form our earth But just by chance this process occurred near the proper type of star to act as our sun to give us warmth light and energy or those things it contributes to our necessities and that it happened just at the right distance from this star so as to regulate the amount of heat from it Do we realize that if we were just a very few miles closer the heat would scorch the face of this globe and render it unable to support life as we know it or if we were just a few miles farther er away we would freeze How is it that it just happened that the earth was formed at the exact point where it gives seasons and climates and those pleasant summer days and the wonders of springtime winter with its sharp biting air and the autumn with its temperatures coordinated for the harvest? How is it that mother earth just fell into tMs exact orbit that makes these things possible? The universe is a well balanced system The planets suns and other bodies have a definite control upon each other and provide the balance necessary to remain meticulously in their orbits with comparatively little variation in 28 1S68 Success is Effort Not Change sys- tem is in constant harmonious motion What bar is there against the possibility of many other worlds like our own which must function in harmony with its neighbors One can look around at the wonders of nature on this planet and examine the perfection of the dimate and weather cycle The relationship between the plant and animal kingdoms is Plants a miracle certainly the emit through photosynthesis which so means element oxygen much to animals and in turn we supply or don't use the 002 which is vital to plants The technical balance of nature its checks and balances to control the population of the various species by methods of prey and lengths of life of the life forms is a wonder All this came about by chance One can hardly think so A supreme intelligence governs all and controls the laws of nature He decides who lives and who dies and what man is able to accomplish This intelligence is God He lives He is real and He regulates the affairs of men more than many of us would like to admit The idea of spontaneous ignition of life on earth is difficult for one to comprehend let alone believe Almost all of the greatest men who have ever lived have been strong believers in God People like Abraham Lincoln expressed more than once their child-lik- e faith in a God Jesus taught that man must have the faith of a cMId very great man once wrote that if the world at large were to accept the preposterous idea that all life evolved from that me spontaneous incident then we might as well alter our wop shipping habits and the honoring of special days during the year in honor of events or people He stated that some who prefer to be learned say that the greatest day in the overall history of the world was when some type of water puppy decided to change fins into feet and gills to lungs and come out and live on land A All Friday February at this may sound a little strange but what could be more strange than a belief that God docs not exist Great men of today Dr Werner Von Braun the rocket and space travel authority is a very devout Christian The Russian cosmonaut who said he saw no God out in space so that means there is none must be miserable when the time comes for a belief in God and the comfort it requires The poet Wordsworth said in effect "Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting: the soul that rises with us our life's star had had elsewhere its setting and pometh from afar: not in entire forgetfulness and not in utter Someone has aptly said "Successful men are are made not born” Success is that illusive quality of life that everyone is conlinjally seeking According to Webster's Dictionary success is the state of having attained a desired end In the book "As a Man Thinketh" we are told that every man is master of his own fate In other words our subsequent success or failure in life is in our own hands The first step on the road to success is to establish a worthwhile goal But care must be taken that the goals arc worth having Contrary to public opinion money doesn't mean success because money is never an end in itself It is merely a means to an end With a definite goal in mind actions should lead us daily closer to that goal All that success really involves is determining a desired end or goal and (hen letting that goal direct everyday actions toward its attainment It sounds easy but the world is full of people who never fully attain the worthwhile ends they set for themselves The reasons for fai'urc in life are many and varied Too often people quit because of a momentary failure The successful man is one who has lost many times but refused to quit He has perse rverance in the face of defeat But often he needs more than that There are those in the losers’ ranks who failed because they couldn’t perse rvere in the face of victory So enthralled were they by momentary success they settled for half their goal instead of all of it Still others fail because they haven’t the courage for success Their decisions are made for them by their closest friends They are afraid to think for themselves One lesson learned early by a successful man is that other people can decide what is best for them but that doesn’t mean it's best for him Finally the hardest barrier to cross is negative attitude It is human nature to want security and negative attitudes are caused by fear of failure If we fail we want to excuse ourselves with "I knew I couldn’t do it from the beginning It wasn't my fault because I just don’t have the ability’’ Julius Caesar after crossing the English Channel for his assault on the British Isles sent his ships back to France so there could be no retreat only final victory To be successful we must do away with negative attitudes which are in effect a line of retreat Remember "To succeed is to refuse to settle for defeat" A Look at CEU History Dramatic New Change are the key words in Utah’s newest Junior College With impressive new facilities a friendly student body and a competent faculty excellence in higher education is a constant goal at CEU The College of Eastern Utah first opened its doors to students in September of 1938 under the name Carbon College At its beginning and for some 21 years nakedness but trailing clouds of glory do we come from God who is our home" There is never a conflict between truths no matter what the subject is Science and Religion do harmonize because they are both truth the college and the following local high school shared the same facilities The campus is located on an attractive 27 acre campus in a pleasant residential district of Price In 1959 Carbon High School moved to a new building Since this separation of the college and the high school a tremendous change has taken place on the CEU campus In 1965 the Legislature passed a bill changing the name of the institution from Carbon College to College of Eastern Utah thus reflecting the larger geographical area the College serves In addition to the name change the college campus began to take on a new image of (Continued on Page Five) THE GOLDEN EAGLE Advisor Editor Assistant Editor Sports Editor Business
