I feel there is no logical reason for this request What does the speech department think they arc living in— dream lard USA Come down to reality I also have information that a member of said speech department acted like an immature baby If said person would grow up nd art like an adult I'll bet she’d get a lot more accomplish-- d than phe is veiling and carrying on liko a little 2 year old 0her clubs would like money to do things but thev accept realty like mature adults Other chibs would like to take trips like the one the speech deoart-rn- to rjHjoiah and beside whv should they cry instead i hey should be overjoyed over the $195000 they did receive I agree with Jackson Marvell and the Senate in the wav thev hadled this situation Good work senators Jit kcip oursiiforest SPECIAL AWARD Some time ago the Soeech Department made special arrangements with the National Junior College Speech Fraternity Phi Rbo Pi to give an honorary membership to a student officer This is the firs time this award has been made at CEU This award is presented to Jackson Marvell Student Body President for his personal support of the Forensic program Neil L Warren Speech Department CEU Editor Golden Eagle It is unfortunate that student discussions In the Theater however and elsewhere feelbad should cause heated and sponings stir anaeonim sor an unwarrnntd letter to the editor This letter signed by a student body officer appeared in last week’s nnocr and aliened that the Speech Department had asked for $5000 of studentbody money received $1500 had been erving all year because of this mistreatment and further demonstrated an uncooperative attitude It is regretable that this situation was opened but since it was let's examine the FACTS The Speech Department was asked to submit a proposed budget of its needs for the 1967-6- 8 school year At this time wo were not told that the student budget had been reduced but we were merely told to propose a request we felt was necessary Therefore we had no idea that of the d we asked for funds Our expanding forensics activities could use and could justify a budget of $5000 (last year we received $3840) The Student Senate approved the recommendations of the Executive Council and Speech was given $1500 Later In the year we asked for additional funds We received no reply Several months ago we requested assistance to have the College of Eastern Utah representd at the National Phi Rho Pi Speech Tournament We were in Miami Florida granted $400 (not the $450 stated in last week’s article) The cost of sending the squad of four was one-thir- $1052 When CEU hosted the Regional Phi Rho Pi Soeech Meet we requested $20 for refreshments for the visiting schools This was done in the name of and credit was given to the Student Government of CEU not to the squad Other than these requests which are a matter of record no consideration official or otherwise have been made by the Speech Department certainly comments hy individuals cannot be taken as representative of a whole department) But let's see if complaints by anyone of the treatment of the Speech Department’s budget are justified Forensics is the only Intercollegiate competitive activity which has been left UP the control of the student government All other competition areas have separate budgets and are controlled by administrative officials As last week’s letter pointed out the forensics squad has brought a great deal of recognition to the college The overflowing trophy cases In the Geary Theater certainlv attest to that fact And it is this recognition which has put CEU on the ’national’ map with all other junior colleges and has played and definitely can continue to play a decisive role fa making the College of Eastern Utah the best Jenin" CoUoro in fhe Vecf Yet our 1967-6budget was cut over 60 from the nrevious year with no real justification given for its reduction Common courtesy certainly would recommend that as a minimum the department whose budget was going to be so extremely affected be called in and spoken to about the situation We were never even 8 notified It seems ufortunatc that the Executive Council's recommendations were presented to the new Senate at their very first meeting and that the new Senators were asked to rubber stamp the judgments of the experienced statesmen before the Senators had adequate time to look into the needs and situations of ALL groups requesting assistance The cost per individual in any inter collegiate comnetit i o n must hv its nature be exnen-siv- e (check the cost nor Individual for the basketball team) But contrary to some opinion the debaters do not stay in suites eat fabulous meals or make money off their meal allowances You will rrmemhe" Nationls trio cost that the $1052 May 17 1968 meets? Again squad members took care of some expenses Perhaps it would be interesting to know how much it costs the forensics individuals to have tho privilege of representing CEU It is also interesting to note that the forensics program is the only competn itive activity that is open to certain-lis y at CEU Since it the interested female population on campus ought to be ablo to represent CEU in a full capacity just as the college men are able Last week’s article seemed to indicate that the Forensics program was limited to only 2 of the college enrollment This is not true The size of the squad is limited only by the willingness of any student to spend the time and effort required for the competirough tion which CEU faces No person who has the genuine desire to join speech activities and has the drive to accomplish his goals has ever been turned away from the forensics squad Phi Rho Pi offered numerous invitations to students during Orietatinn Week to come join us This offer was renewed aeam in March as we tried to build our team for Rcgio III Phi Rho Pi and Iintermountain Forensics Conference Meets At the beginning of the school year most prouns on rammis were disappointed about the finance cuts These organizations did one of two things They either had their say and got satisfaction for their cause or they shrugged their shoulders and chose to do little or nothing We on the forensics team chose to act but not through the crying sessions mentioned in last week's letter We did not DEMAND additional funds from the Senate but merely request ed them We are extremely grateful for the Senate’s cooperation and helpfulness We also used two other means to supnort ourselves: (1) our presentations of "The Twelfth Niht" and "Wishing Stars" and (2) our own resources Certainly we do not feel that comments by a few persons or one incident are nnv more repre sentative of the Speech Depart-methan are similar incidents and comme-- s bv n sfdet bodv officer in fhn cafeteria indicative of h Executive Council or the Senate Our aim is not to bring embarrassment or dissention Sneerh erd the Executive Council nnd Senate Our mninr concern i fl to b"i honor and recognition to CEU through a successful forensics program and to make the school proud of us ns her representatives and 2)( to helo provide a unified effort with all other groups and organizations to make CEU a rewarding and enjoyable institution of learning inter-collegia- te wo-me- inter-collegia- te nt be-twe- two-fnl- d: Sincerely Kate Bcsso President Phi Rho Pi For all your Jewelry needs $400 was pive to us hv th Senate Where did the other $052 come from?
