Show IE n © ONifiM CEU’s annual attempt to put cowboys in orbit without a rocket comes off tonight with the CEU Rodeo held at 8:00 in the boys donkey race Girls as well as boys will play a prominent role in this year’s rodeo Athough there are no skirted entries in the brahma bull riding or saddle bronc there are some in the goat tying the donkey races and the barrel racing In the girls donkey race ten courageous CEU coeds will match their knowledge and strength against tbe stubborn burro The intrpid participants will be Maylocn Balle and Judy Spencer Shawnda Peterson and Carolan Postma Linda Staley and Alene Wadsworth Judy and Lana Leonard Teresa Curtis and Shellee Sitterud and Kathy Allred and Sue Geary county fairgrounds arena The rodeo is celebrating its tenth anniversary It is sponsored by the Rodeo Club and is the big event of Spring Quarter Providing the bucking stock for the tenth consecutive year stock contractors Nelson and Allred are celebrating their 10th anniversary with the CEU show Critters like Baby Doll Suicide Widowmaker Snowman Sal and Mary Poppins should give this year’s cowboys all they can handle Some of CEU's Stoney Burks who will be trying them out are Ray Jeffs Lyn and Greg Marsing Steve and Greg Alex Lynn Anderson Tidwell and Hal Mecham A full slate of events has been planned for both nights Leading off is the bareback riding yhich will be followed by the saddle brancs goaf tying barrel racing girls donkey race ribbon roping calf roping bull riding and Fer-derb- Ber-ens- en Reigning over this year’s rodeo are Queen Kara Gardner and her two attendants Lana Leonard and Marianne Allred Appearing on Bob Welti's weather program Wednesday the regal trio gave the CEU rodeo a real publicity boost Tonight they'll have the less glamorous job of corraling stray stock After the dust from Saturday’s show settles Rodeo Week will finish with come to a the women's a dance at gvm A real live Western Bard will fiddle up a storm At the danre belt nll-firni- rd cowboy and cowgirl Skin Housekeeper's Western Band should keep things lively well into the night Noted sculptor to exhibit at C 1 U Dr Arvard Fairbanks internationally known Utah sculptor and father of Justin Fairbanks of the CEU art department will be on campus next Tuesday May 21 to give a demonstration lecture in sculpture This will be the kickoff to an exhibit of his works which will be on display In the halls until the end of this quarter The demonstration will be in the Geary Theatre at 8:00 pm A reception will follow in the Geary Theatre Lounge wh'rh will be under the auspices of the faculty women of the college Dr Fairbanks will be sponsored by the Art Department He will be accompanied on the trip by his wife (Ed Note— the paper staff had the opportunity to attend a banquet with Dr and Mrs Fairbanks recently and can attest to their charming personaliies) Dr and Mrs Fairbanks are the parents of eight sons and they also have two adopted Greek daughters from Sparta Greece The original study for his Winter Quarters monument will be among the collection shown here as well as the first studies of his Joeph Smith and two Lincolns He and his son Justin attends nationals at Miami Miami Beach Florida and the National Junior College Forensics Tournament represented a year of hopes and dreams come true and many yean of time work and energy rewarded for four members of the CEU debate team and their coach Neil Warren and his four “man’’ group of Toni Skrincr Kathy Allred Joanc Pappas and Kate Bcsso made the fabulous trip to Florida The girls left Salt Lake City Monday morning April 29 at United Airlines 8:15 aboard bound for Kansas City After arriving in the Missouri city the group had an eight hour layover before continuing the trip That evening they boarded a TWA plane which landed in Miami at 10:30 am Headquarters for the national tournament and schools' occupancy for the week was the beautiful Marco Polo Hotel In Miami Beach Tuesday the girls were able to take a couple of hours advantage of the warm finest pieces The public is cordially Invited Florida sun and the Atlantic to attend the demonstration and Ocean which Is at the hotel’s reception In honor of Dr Fair- backdoor They also did some banks next Tuesday evening shopping before settling down to an evening of working and polishing up events for the tournament’s competition Tuesday saw Mr Warren at he host school all day long as he was continually Involved in final tournament preparations and administrative meetings and conferences As last year’s National President of Phi Rho Pi Mr Warren was called upon as tournament consultant and high ranking official in business and policy making decisions of the conference oral interpretation persuasion and information Joane joined the others in interp and persuasion and also went into extemporaneous speaking and debate extemp impromptu speaking and debate were on Kate’s schedule Each girl competed in three prelimianry rounds of individual events and six rounds of debate Mr Warren was cm the run again as his function at the meet was also to head the huge job of judge supervision This was the most important job at the meet and one which always had our coach working hours overtime Each night of the tournament had him in executive and business meetings and special conferences after the long forensics day had ended Thursday morning saw CEU up at 5:30 so they could be at Miami-Dad- e to begin their second day of nationals at 8 am Again competition ran all day until 7:30 thaf evening At that time the girls attended a student Phi Rho Pi meeting to 1969 student officers and to pass suggestions for better National Tournaments In years to a-b- The Natonal Phi Rho Pi was held on the campus of Miami-Dad- e Junior College-Nortwhich is located In Opa Fla a drive from Miami BenHi The four-da- y meet was held May 4 The tournament opened on Wednesday mornfog with a welcome assembly from the National Phi Rho PI officers student officers and officials of Miami-Dad- e College rmuoctition got underway Immediately and continued until 9:30 tht evening The CEU girls were busy at work as they entered three or the maximum number of four events Toni and Kathy spoke in Tour-name- nt h cl-c- ct come 5:30 rolled around rather early again Friday morning for the CEU representatives Preliminary rounds were finished up in the morning and early afternoon while semi-finaand finals dominated the remainder of the day Friday night was sot aside for the participants to relax and to have a chance to really get to know one another All boarded two riverhoats The Jungle Queen for a tour of goregous Fort Lauderdale-by-the-Se- a After they had completed half of the cruise they feasted at a and shrimp dinner then were treated to old-tivaudeville entertainment before the return trip Saturday a special awards banquet was held at 12:30 in tho Persian Room of the Marco Polo Hotel Although CEU didn't win any of the national places she did an extremely creditable job The competition represented the very best In the entire nation This was coupled with some hard luck from judges But the gals came home far from emp
