although not all are over twenty-fou- r years of age Many Instructors report that the “older” college group makes a definite contribution to their classes One instructor perhaps best represents the feelings of all instructors when he states that the influence of the older students from the standpoint of both maturity and eagerness to learn is a definite contribution to my class” And how do the more mature students fare with their younger competition Most of them seem frightened at first they state but are able to adjust rapidly once they learn the ropes “I first realized that Carbon College was for everyone when I heard Dr Claude J Burtenshaw give a talk in a ladies’ dub” states one "veteran” of last year “He stated: This college is for adults as well as for the youth It is for you and it is a shame if you do not take advantage of it” “I was so impressed with the things that he said that I repeated them to my husband and family They knew I had always wanted to go to school so they encouraged me to ‘take advantage of this opportunity “I was very frightened when I entered the class rooms and approached the teachers and asked them about getting into their d asses but they were so gracious kind and understanding that the terrible feeling left me The students too were nice to me “1 never learned so much so quickly or had a better time than I did in the two classes for which I enrolled In fact I was so impressed that the following quarter I returned and took two more classes “My friends smile when they learn that I am attending college I could stay home and just “rock” they say but after many years out of school I am thrilled to be enrolled again this year I feel that I will be a better citizen mother church worker and a more informed wife by attending college” This student echoes the sentiments of most of the group members who find interest in college work Thad Nelson salutatorian of the 1960 graduating class at the college Anna Lee Olsen Florence Pitts Bess
