mvum of urine hair breath or saliva may reveal other information that is A t first glance testing for ille- gal drags as a condition of employment seems like a good idea Drags are bad for the body mind and soul and anything that discourages their use must be good On closer examination however policies requiring employees to pass a drag test are often rife with dangers and inconsistencies and usually violate privacy rights We’re not talking about jobs where drag use endangers lives — like driving a bus flying an airplane or operating heavy machinery In such occupations the public’s right to be safe overrides the individual’s right of privacy But when the right to public safety does not outweigh the right of privacy we think lawmakers and judges should prohibit drag testing Ibe right of privacy is simply & right to be left alone As citizens of nobody else’s business: unrelated health problems medications prescribed by physicians or genetic predispositions to certain diseases Even if the tests reveal perfect health that is still no one else’s business Besides submitting to such a test is humiliating and presumes guilt which is why those higher up the corporate ladder often exempt themselves from their own policies Also many companies do not consider evidence of alcohol use away from work as dangerous although it can be as harmful as illegal drags Threatening people with the loss of their livelihood is not the best way to fight drug abuse On the contrary those who lose their jobs may sink further into addiction stealing and dealing to support their habit a free country we are not subject to Educating people about the random and unwarranted searches of our homes and neither should we be subject to random and unwarranted searches of something much more private — our bodies The argument that those who are doing nothing illegal have nothing to fear just doesn't wash Samples effects of addiction is the best way to prevent drag abuse and treating addiction as a disease is the best way to help those who abuse drags Yes drag abuse increases absen- teeism and reduces productivity But freedom and dignity are more important y work in system at sheriff’s race state prisoners the jail has housed state inmates for many years You also to need to understand that the jail is still too small And sometimes it is necessary to send prisoners to other facilities (It's that or let them go) Sheriff Nelson is working towards making room for all prisoners to stay in Cache and that takes money You also forget that WH Larson has cost the county taxpayers by suing oa a trail that had a northeast exposure that probably didn’t see much sun When we arrived at the crest of the Wellsvilles we encountered a huge snowdrift but still thought nothing of it because it was no problem to make our way around it and continue our hike on to die top of Scout Peak From the very top we had a good view of the trail across the ridge first to die Wellsville Cone and then on to Box Elder Peak There were a few snowdrifts along the way but it looked like we would be able to avoid diem by staying just west of the ridge line For several miles everything went fine We were abk to hike along the west side of the ridge where there was no snow and would occasionally peek over the east side to take in the spectacular view of Cache Valley and check out the snow The Bible says cueful we could make it I didn't realize the thing we could do was continue that in a very short time we would have and only for the best hope some serious encounters with snow trail finally left the the Fortunately All too soon we were faced with a mountainside and switched back to steep huge snowdrift that completely covered the west side of the ridge There were the trail There was no way around dangerous position I was in I been earlier in the day I was umm! was scared to death and didn't dare to that we had made it and thought about how foolish we were to put ourselves in look down again It took about 15 minutes to go 30 or 40 such a dangerous position Again that feet and we did it with only one minor night as I lay in bed thinking about the ‘ slip I was able to catch myself before events of the day I concluded that hiking sliding too fer down the mountain When across those snowfields on top of the we finished our hands were numb from Wellsville range was ooe of the dumbest clinging to the cold snow our nerves and most dangerous things I have were frazzled but we were safe and able in a long time to continue Kendra and I now have a greater A few hundred feet further we encounappreciation for the Wellsvilles As we tered another snowdrift covering the look up at them from the floor we trail Exactly the same situation as can take pride in the feet valley that we walked before steep terrain and no way around across the took some dangerous it Now we had a real dilemma snow- chances and top lived to tell about it drifts covering the trail both in front and I would do it again but only in behind us What do we do — turn the when I can look up from the year around and go back or try to make our valley floor and not see a trace of snow way across this snowdrift again?
