building brings beauty to woman this brief statement is dent clent I 1 think to male mal e many women embark upon a physical development course what will bonan not do to become beautiful 9 they some of them at least powder and paint and bleach their hair and do all kinds of other foolish things in an at fript to improve their appearance it if they but knew what a routine of dally daily healthful exercise would do for them they would soon forsake their toilet tables tor for the gymnasium there Is nothing in this world more lovely than a beautiful woman there Is nothing more pleasing to the eye than a browned ropy cheekes full cheated straight backed woman let her be all these and she is certainly queen when I 1 see a poor pale narrow cheated weak meak woman with her waist drawn up so tight that it is impossible for her to take a deep full full breath the kind that puts health and strength into the human body my heart fairy fairly bleeds tor for her my late wife baying having at one time been an athlete I 1 am in a position to know just what Is beneficial and what is not for the woman in the first a woman should dregs dres so 0 o that there wi wl I 1 be plenty of room tor the lungs fo 0 have full play ninety nine per cent of them are dressed so thit it is impossible fr it them to take a good deep breath they breathe up in their chests only consequently they are short winded then again the average woman spi s dom gives a thought to the idea ot or dally daily exercising she seldom walks unless she Is compelled to she shuts herself up in a hot stuffy room eats improperly and then wonders that she Is subject to so many complaints golf s many Advant advantages aces I 1 must say that in the past few years there has apen a big change in the mode of living adopted by women I 1 the game of golf has been cespon bible sible for this to a large degree and I 1 cannot say too much for it as a mear s of exercise for women women it provides just the kind of outdoor life that they need it takes them out into the sun and makes them brown and healthy looking it fills their lungs tul full ot of pule fresh air while the continual walking and swinging of the clubs supplies exercise for the entire body women play golf of coure you can overdo it women differ diner so much in their physical make up hat that what is medicine for one is j pol to n tor another for this reason a woman should carefully guard her strength do not overtax yourself go about your sports and your walks with mod oration too much exercise is worse morse than not enough you can easily find out just what vou are capable of en during and then shape your work and play to suit your strength do not be a phys cal freak what I 1 vi ant most of all to impress upon women Is not to try to make physical freal s of themselves A woman cannot stand too much training in any one direction at the expense of the rest of her body as well as a man can her physical make up Is not constructed tor for it for this reason she should try to di divide ide her N exercises as evenly as possible A woman who can row ride a wheel and a horse swim shoot play tennis and golf all moderately mode abely well and not try to overtax her strength in any one we 7 branch la Is th woman who will be strong ana healthy she does not lace herself too tight she glor es eb in the pure air and delights to throw out her shoulders and drink in long deep mouthfuls ot of it and she nurses her strength as carefully as does the thib is the m woman oman whom it Is a joy to see this Is the woman who is queen adv ce to for the health and rearing of the r child children reni how can I 1 train my child ro so he he will grow up to be an athlete 7 9 V sa s1 this Is a question which I 1 anva am a constantly at the outset I 1 want to say to both fathers and mothers who put this question 0 me don t BY this don t I 1 mean do not start out with the idea that ou want to make an athlete of our boy just so sure as this plan is pursued you will overwork him in his tender years and end by sending him to an early grave but do start out to make of him a big strong healthy child who will grow into a fine manly man and his athletic bent will follow tollow in the ila natural tural course of events too much training for the young bones and ducles is tar far more hare tul ful than too little it if a child gets no exercises for the muscles there Is a chance for him to mal e up for this neglect when he grows up it if he gets too much and his weak little muscles are strained and his supple bones warped be he can never fully recover double strain weakens it must be remembered that a child s brain Is growing even more rapidly than its body this is a strain on its system but a certain amount of healthy exercise will help it to stand this strain too much exercise will add to the this double strain will end by weakening the entire tern there Is nothing that can be it q easily trained as the muscles of a child the muscles and bones are both loft and pliable thoy thy can h P molded like so much putty see that they are molded the right way there Is not a day ay passes that I 1 do not have a romp with my little son I 1 also put him through a regular dally daily course of exercise I 1 instruct him in gymnastic movements that will tend to make him supple in every joint at the same time the tiny muscles are slowly but surely building up on his little limbs and body that Is the way they should be formed slowly al most as slowly as the wearing away of a rock by the waves of the ocean do not start too soon another point which should be care fully followed is notto not to start too early to train your children just so sure as you do you will put some strain upon them that their young bodies cannot endure and then they are permanently incapacitated all the bright hope of making a man among men of your boy are spoiled by undue haste to make a youthful wonder of him when your boys and your girls too tor that matter are just able to toddle around the best thing you can do Is to see that they are kept outdoors as much as possible children cannot get too much fresh air get them up early in the morning and send them out into the fresh air even if you live an the city keep them outdoors when the weather per mits better to have them dirty and healthy than clean and sickly follow the foregoing plan and then when you think abat the children are able to stand a certain amount of simple exercise commence to put them through their gymnastics every morning and night they will grow strong they cannot help it it if them will follow the rules given in the first art cle bear in mind that your children must have plenty of fresh air and moderate regular exercise and they will grow up to be men and women of whom you may
