Head coach John L Smith is excited about the start of his second season at USU But don't ask him about the sched “I don't even want to talk about the schedule" Smith said “With the exception of when I was an assistant at Washington State this is the toughest schedule I've been involved with “The road schedule is quite demanding with trips to Southern Miss Oklahoma State and Texas Tech I honestly believe this is the best home schedule our Utah State fans could ask for with Utah BYU and Nevada" Those three big road trips just happen to be in a row The Aggies will be in Romney Stadium for six games this year ce including the season opener Aug 31 against instate rival Utah The next weekend Cal State Northridge comes to Logan Other home games include Brigham Young (Oct 4) Idaho (Oct 26) North Texas (Nov 2) and Nevada (Nov 9) But first some questions have to be answered this spring Two areas hit by graduation are at linebacker and offensive line Kenyatta Green (96 tackles last year) and Markell McCain (85 tackles) are starter gone from the defense Two-yeDavid Gill does return to anchor down the position The senior had a school record 168 tackles in 1995 Senior Spencer Waggoner returning are senior Troy Kema and junior Brandon Dyson and Dyson will miss the spring drills with a shoulder injury The addition of junior college transfer Mark Rommel should help Two other Aggies that will miss spring with injuries are junior defensive lineman Chad Lyman (knee) and sophomore running back Ernesto Ramos (shoulder) The Aggies have plenty of strengths starting at running back With Abu Wilson getting another year of eligibility ar ar Smith couldn't be happier Wilson rushed for 1476 yards and 15 touchdowns throwing for 2774 yards and 12 TDs Senior Matt Wells is listed as his backup The defensive line has beefed up Senior Danilo Robinson and junior Ben Gotland Demario Brown provide quality depth “Abu Wilson has all the tools to be an impact player in the NFL" Smith said “Abu will have every opportunity to be as good as any running back in the country He is the complete package as a runner pass receiver and blocker “Our running game should be a strength this fall Our depth at running back should be as good as any team in the country” combined for 16 sacks in 95 and are joined by a healthy junior Whiter Fiefia and JC transfers Adam Jones and John Latu “Teams won’t push us around like they did a year ago” Smith said “If we stay healthy we have a chance to be pretty good up front "Danilo Robinson is the best defensive end in the Big West Conference He continues to get bigger stronger and faster Vfe’d like to move Danilo around a little this fell to make him even more disruptive” The kicking game is solid with Micah Knorr and Nathan Morreale The seniors have been sharing the punting and (dace-kickiduties since they were freshmen “I truly believe we’ll be better at every position in 1996” Smith said Fans will get a chance to see this Sophomore Melvin Blue
