| Show irrigators CONVENE 1 ELEVENTH NATIONAL TION CONGRESS IN SESSION greatest session in history of organization over thirteen hundred delegates being in attendance the eleventh meeting of the na lional irrigation congress opened in ogden ou on the morning of the under most auspicious circumstances the attendance is more than double that of the largest previous meeting over 1300 delegates from twenty seven states and territories having presented their credentials the rep resen tation includes men from the at bantle lantic to the pacific and from the brit ish line to the rio grande in adoll tion to the number of distinguished foreigners who are present two sessions of the congress were held and two purely social functions took place on tuesday the first ses sea slon held in the forenoon was oc coupled chiefly by addresses of wel wet come by the mayor and the governor and a response by the president of the congress senator W A dark clark ot of montana the afternoon session was occupied by an address by united states senator burton of kansas the naming of committeemen and the reading of communications from prominent men in different parts oi of the country who were unable to be in attendance in the afternoon the visiting newspaper men were enter tamed at the hermitage in ogden canyon and in the evening a brilliant reception and ball tendered by sen sell ator dark clark assisted by citizens ot of ogden to secretary of agriculture wilson representatives of president roosevelt and cabinet delegates to the congress and newspaper representatives senta tives took place at the new now building fight for next Con congress greis the fight for the next convention promises to be between boise idaho and el paso texas although reno nevada has displayed great activity so tar far the idaho delegation over strong agreed to unite on boise prominent idahoans at the conven tion are senator dubois governor morrison Morr lson congressman french judge sullivan major fred reed of hailey halley attorney general J A bag ley of bear lake J H brady of po catello colonel S J stark register of the land office at hailey halley ex coun cilman W C annett of boise depre senta tives C C moore of fremont county and J M steele of bear lal e county state senator dark clark of cas cos bla sla county and many others president congratulates fred J kiesel chairman of the ex committee of the nationiel Nati onil ir congress received the fol loving lowing telegram from president roosevelt white house washington oyster bay day N Y sept 13 1903 my dear sir permit me to express through you to the irrigation congress my hearty congratulations upon what has been accomplished in the jear ear that has just passed especially bhail e I 1 regard this as opening a ne v ei a in the treatment of irrigation from tho the national standpoint none of our in policies will be of more con sequence to the future of the country during luring the next few decades thin this matter of irrigation it Is of vital consequence to the inter iro 11 tain fain states and to the entire semi and region and what is of vital con sequence to one portion of our coun try is of vital consequence to the whole country sincerely yours THEODORE ROOSEVE Lr congressional NOTES the el paso delegates set forth that their city Is the biggest city in the biggest county in the biggest con gressional gress lonal district in the biggest state in the biggest nation on earth the attractions offered to tol the con gress by boise are the prettiest city in the west a central point ot of tion activity and the largest private irrigation enterprise in the world the twin falls canal which Is designed to reclaim acres of land pennsylvania and vermont are rep resented by the smallest delegations in the congress each having one dele gate william E smythe commonly known as the father of the irrigation congress and who while editor of the irrigation age at salt lake city twelve years ago was responsible for the calling of the first session of the irrigation congress in that city Is here as a delegate from southern call fornia and Is a candidate tor for dent of the congress the official badge of the convention Is a gun metal device representing a bee hive and a wheat field over which a stream of water Is pouring from the mouth of a newly discovered the goddess of irrigation ex united states senator joseph M carey of wyoming author of the fa carey land bill is a delegate to the congress when his name was announced as a committeeman from wyoming during the afternoon ses slon it was given a hearty round ol 01 applause att i |
