Show WORK ON PANAMA CANAL thirty thousand men will be re quiren on the work admiral walker a estimate ot of the number ot of men to be employed on the panama canal when the united states formally shall have entered upon the project Is 30 for all practical pur poses this government now Is engaged in the construction of the canal un der the agreement signed may 3rd by secretary hay and mi cromwell the american Am rIcan representative of the new panama canal company the work of construction was to be continued by the new canal company until the ex change of ratification of the canal treaty with the understanding that the united states should pay for such construction work the men now en on the canal construction work are principally jamaica negroes As they are inured to the central amer lean climate they do not suffer seri asly from the diseases prevalent on the isthmus the local labor supply is insufficient to meet the demand it Is probable therefore that laborers will be drawn by the thousand from the southern states and the islands of the west indies As the labor supply is controlled by a company organized for the purpose it is quite likely that mana chinese and japanese laborers will be imported for worl on the ca nal they are excellent excellent workmen and are fitted by nature for work of that kind and in that climate |
