Show PAGE 3 Badge City Nets — JUNE 24, 1994 Minersville Lake PH compared toupland springs Attendance was sparse at the June 16 Public Meeting to discuss results of the Minersville Reservoir pollution study. Dr. DeVere Merritt, the B.Y.U. Professor under contract to Five County Association of Governments for the purpose of conducting the study, expressed that the main interest represented comparison. "The local people are more aware of conditions, but if we are going to make definitive statements we need to consider that our people are not only trained and qualified; they do this on a routine basis," Judd said. PH in those samples may be high, which is the general condition in nearly time for farming and ranching. Many of the associated changes would be asked whether Minersville Lake was there or not. The overall quality and pollution management is more of a’ change in attitude toward our environment," Merritt said. The Phase Cre and all of the waters throughout Study (92-3085) is working with a total budget of ranchers. "I had hoped for a little better representation of recreational interest," he said. Floyd Yardley, a member of the Clean Lakes Water. Board, . questions whether the water samples used in the study were taken Utah. "I don't see that as any major issue," Merritt said.. He. explained that $129,779. $90,845. Federal EPA dollars and $38,934. was. local farmers in places that present the most accurate overview of water quality. He and Sam Kerksiek, as concerned residents, took some water samples of their own. Yardley contacted Harry _ Judd, Department of Water Quality, and. asked permission to submit them. When they were not picked up by the professionals in a timely manner, Yardley made a trip to Salt Lake City and delivered them to. the Water Quality Office in late April or early May. Test. results samples were at the Beaver week. The two samples to from those not presented meeting last men also sent a private laboratory for independent testing. "It may be that they are trying to get the water level better in the reservoir than the springs are producing. There is just no way to feed that reservoir water that is cleaner than the springs ' produce,” he said. Judd said ___ the samples were processed but the results presented at were the not public . meeting because. the intent. may have been to make a - there two normal reasons for high concentration: 1. A direct result of geological formation. the The -minerals leach into the water from contact with phosphorus in the the rock - formation. 2. Significant surface pollution source leaching down through the soil and seeping horizontally to come up in a spring. There is no direct health concern from the PH value of the water unless the phosphorus level increases 100:times, and the nitrogen level increases 10 to 50 times. Present findings indicate that the lake has improved over the last 20 years. The ultimate goal would be to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus by onethird; that would represent local or payment in kind dollars. $10, 900. was set aside for state administration. Five County Association of Governments has discontinued __ their participation in the project. John Williams, FCAOG director, cited funding as the reason for pulling out. "The community is not interested, and the . County is not interested. Since we are not a taxing entity, there was just no place to go for funding," he said. The purpose of Grant #S-00870701, is to modify the draft report and make it available to the advisory committee. That action has been delayed until September Ist. According to Dr. Merritt, if it is designated a 319 non-point pollution area there will be significant funding available for clean-up. "Environmental problems have been addressed one area at a time: now is the _that the reservoir can be improved without ominous regulations. Merritt believes that most of the recommendations and controls in the final draft will require only marginal changes. Future cleanup costs? "That is completely unknown," he said. The public will have an opportunity to comment before the final evaluation statement is turned over to the EPA. Shank You The family of Steven P. Miller wishes to express their appreciation to the many friends and relatives who showed they cared by bringing food to the house, sending cards and flowers, and donating to the hospital. It is wonderful to live in a community where such kindnesses are shown. Mrs. William P. Miller and Family Russell Mayer Russell Mayer has received a Governor's Volunteer Award. = Mr. Mayer was honored with this award by Governor and Mrs. Leavitt and the Utah Council of Volunteers, on Tuesday, April 14, 1994 at dinner at the University of Utah.
