the cat family Bobcats have nine lives it looks like swimming coach Cal Jensen has saved the best year for last In his ninth Besson Jensen appears to have come iv with a winner on the boys' Bide His girls have a decent shot at second place in Region 5 which is where the real battle is in a territory at the mercy of the Ogden Tigers The Region 5 swim meet will be held Wednesday and Thursday at Ogden “We’ve finished second four or five times but we've never won a regional title out right" said Jensen at a workout Monday “We were first going into the last relay mice We won that relay but the kids jumped in the water before the race was over and they were disqualified’’ This time the ’Cats are concentrating on getting it right and thanks to a crew of distance swimmers it looks like they’re the boys’ team to beat with Ogden ready to pounce in case of a cramp As for the girls the meet is shaping up as a contest for second place with Logan The terrific Tigers have staked out the whole elephant leaving the rest of the region splashing for the scraps Jill Jorgensen leads the Wednesday Bobcat divers into competition beginning at 1 pm The defending state champion and Sky View’s top athlete any uniform Jorgensen a is sure to simply excitement as well challenge for Mountain Crest's Karl Stiles “I’ve seen it written on a piece of paper on a letter to Jill’’ said Jensen “'You're as good as she is”’ The letter was from the Brigham Young University diving coach and the ‘‘she” referred to was Tristen Baker the Cougar star and the No 2 diver in the nation BYU wants Jorgensen but then so does the Utah State gymnastics team She’ll have a choice to make but for now she’s poised to lead the Bobcat girls past Logan and then take her second state title Thursday the swimmers take over beginning at 10 am “If we win (the boys competition) the key will be that we’ll get our people in the top two or three but well also said Jensen “I think get our people in that’s where it will be won “The team that scores 250 points will be the region swim champion If the team scores 225 points it will be very tight” The meet should be a doozy from the u u -6" Jackson from Ben Lomond and Rhett Hellstern from Logan — that’s going to be dynamite” said Jensen “You’re talking about probably the two top sprinters in the state of Utah “Steve Davis of Ogden has clocked 5:19 in the 500 Ian’s (Troxler from Sky View) best time is 5:25 and (Mike) Wilkinson’s (from Logan) is 5:28 Those three are going head to head in the 500 and in the 200 “We’ve got up here (in the region) probably the top six divers in the state The butterfly race will be horrendous Geoff Morse of Mountain Crest will be seeded first teams Both boys and girls teams are expected to make a run at fronrunners Sky View (boys) and Ogden (girls) in dual meet competition Logan’s boys ruts their hopes on Bill Stanley in the 200 individual medley race and 100 yard breaststroke “Bill is our best hope for an Individual champion in the region and state meet” said Logan coach Yolanda Bates “He is 8 second behind the best breaststroke time in the state and that is practically nothing” Bates expects second place finishes from Hellstern in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races and from Wilkinson in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle races “I’d like to see one of them win a region title but it will be kind of tough” said Bates “Mike in the 200 tapers really well and should have a pretty good chance in the 200” The third-yea- r coach predicts a clow contest with Sky View’s boys 5-- 5 and our Shane Roghaar second Morse is definitely favored he’s a second faster than Roghaar ‘'Bill Stanley from Logan will win a couple of region championships Greg Roper from Sky view should win the backstroke Jackson — I don’t know that Hellstern can beat him — win win a couple The championships will be spread out” Here’s a look at Cache Valley’s chances MOUNTAIN CREST It’s not easy swimming for Mountain Crest ’these days but a few individual team members have managed to put together a season for themselves Head coach Maurice Wiberg said the Mustangs don’t have a large enough team to place weU overall at this week’s Region 5 1 near-champions- meet but several MC swimmers have a legitimate shot at making the state finals TWhat we’re hoping for is to help our best swimmers qualify to state” Wiberg said Monday “Other than that we would like to bund for next year increase enthusiasm” Mountain (rest was built without a pool of its own and so the teams have to take a bus to Logan four or five times a week to practice Wiberg said the travel discouraged some swimmers from staying with the team and a series of misadventures with the bus itself has dampened interest as welL “One night the brakes froze up one night the bus caught on fire and we’ve been without a heater” ne said “The kids have to ride home in the cold worried that their hair will freeze “It’s hard to ken enthusiasm up but I’m proud of these kids for hanging in there” Morse has already qualified for the state meet and several teammates are dose to state times Troy Shank is about a second off the pace in the 100 freestyle and Scott Whoolery is just a couple of seconds from qualifying in the breaststroke In addition Bruce Olsen is leu than a second from qualifying in the freestyle His best time was25J5 the state time is 2505 On the girls team Jennifer Nielsen could make state time in the backstroke The Mustangs’ team has also turned in a score Wiberg said Olsen Morris Scott and Bruce Brockman compete in the event In diving Mountain (host has two contenders Cody Reeder is rated No 1 in the state and Stiles is No 2 50-ya- rd 206-rela- state-qualifyi- ng LOGAN Always the bridesmaid and never the bride tag applies to the Logan Grizzly swimming hard-foug- ht coming out on top “Everybody has some events that they could win We will win the medley relay the 200 individual medley and the 100 yard breast stroke Ogden will win the 200 and 500 yard free style Mountain Crest the 100 butterfly Sky View the diving and backstroke and Ben Lomond will probably win the 50 and 100 yard freestyles” said Bates “Everybody has the same amount of events they can win “Whoever places the most in the top six places is going to win” she said “We did win quite a few events (in dual meets with Ogden and Sky View) Sky View beat Ogden twice and Bear River beat SV once The lint to the third place overall will be real clow” Bates said there is little doubt who will be the girls region champion “Ogden Is going to win it royally” said Bates “I have a lot of freshman and Ogden has always had the strength and depth I think we are going to get second like we always do” Outside the diving title that she says will be taken by Sky View’s Jorgenson Bates sew a complete tiger sweep of the swimming events Logan 2 in dual meets lost only to Ogden and that’s why Bates thinks the Grizzlies will be the the bridesmaids in the girls competition “Tracy Bachman once a diver has a pretty good chance at the 50 freestyle” said Bates “In the top four category I see Maura Nelson in the 200 and 500 yard freestyles individual d Debbie Morrow in the e and freshman Kristin medley style Cook m the 50 freestyle and our relay teams should get second” “I was surprised by this team” said Bates “When I first saw them I thought we were going to be in deep trouble Thu nave come a long way and we’ve only lost to Ogden” 8-- 200-yar- 500-fre- It also has wme sharks at the top namely Troxler and Roper not to mention returning regional champion diver Bucky Brown Troxler set a school record in the 500 freestyle old record was clocking 5:25 The 10-ye- ar 5:83 Roper is unbeaten in the backstroke He’s just three seniors on the team the others being freestyler Paul Olsen and diver Bret Larsen The Bobcats have just two freshmen making the team heavy with juniors and sophomores spelling trouble for the opposition for years to come The way Jensen has it figured Troxler will be first or second in the 200 and 500 with John Huff flniahing third or fourth Steve Hawkes and Dave Anderson will be in the top 10 so “in both the 200 and 500 we’ll have four kids who score out of 12" In the backstroke Roper will be seeded first with Shaun Seeley third Paul Daines fifth and Russ McKenna eighth or ninth “Again four swimmers in the top 10” iWe don’t have any really top sprinters but what’s going to happen is that the top sprinters (from Logan Ben Lomond and Bear River) are going to cancel each other outand we’ll get a couple of points “Everyone will balance each other out in sprints and well dean up in distance “We’re going to win it if we win it with two kids in at least every event and four kids in (me of some events” In the 50 the ’Cats are counting on Roghaar to “hopefully be no worse than fifth with Jason Christensen seventh or eighth In the 100 Olsen and Christensen must score And in the relays said Jensen “Sky View will take no worse than third in either relay “One of the things we’ve been strong m all year is winning close races We’ve really emphasised how important it is to beat people We can’t be concerned with time so much as with beating people’’ The ’Cate were themselves beaten Just once tor Bear River before Christmas They swam that meet without Roper and Troxler Then with their two aces they came back and with and blew the Bears out of the water winning by 80 points Ogden gave them a challenge at the end of the season and Jensen figures that the Tigers will be the ones to watch at reghmals On the girls side Jensen sees a Tiger sweep of the individual championships outside of diving The ’Cats are nevertheless giving Marsha Johnson an “outside chance” m the butterfly “I see Ogden winning by 100 plus points” said Jensen “Logan beat us last week by 10 They have beaten us twice in dual meets because they have the depth But they will lose some because Ogden is going to hurt them badly Swimmers that have been are SKY VIEW After going 1 in the regional season the Bobcat boys are ready to take their place as the best Bobcat team since 1978-7- 9 when the ’Cats took eighth in the state then “That’s about as good as we’ve had” said Jensen “and this one has more depth” 9-- 1-- A the races they won only three Logan won’t have any divers and weU have four They’ll probably not us 40 points in diving and I don’t now if they cu neat us spotting us that many points” 11 -- |
