I the faculty perceive that those administer the university are listening to them as redecisions regarding the future of the university are made? — Are the faculty satisfied with the way things are going at the university? — And is the current process of retrenchment being carried out fairly? Calvin HUmer a professor In USD's political science department and AAUP chapter president Monday said approximately 600 faculty members are in the university's employ A survey was sent to all faculty listed in the personnel office with the exception of administrators Httmer said Results were based on the 300 faculty members who responded on their own initiative therefore the survey did not represent Just a random sample of USU faculty he said — Do who — a general feeling that salaries are concerns of came of out that the faculty survey substantially less than salaries of faculinclude: ty at comparable institutions and that Some of the shared — administrative problems with the tenure and promotion procedures For example failure to provide a copy of the USU code to all faculty and failure to establish role statements and unclear guidelines for tenure and promotion — a feeling among 75 percent of the faculty that tenure may not assure academic freedom at USU — a general feeling among faculty that they are not efficiently involved in the decision-makin- g process with regard to salaries andor benefits — an increased uneasiness among faculty evidenced by the fact that 62 percent of the tenured faculty and 69 percent of the untenured faculty are either actively considering or actively looking for employment elsewhere The Amal militia captured an Israeli last October after Us plane crashed during an air raid on south Lebanon In Haifa a skeptical Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Perea said today “Nabih Berri has no source or Jihad to release ' lean hostages" In Washington White House spokesman Dan Howard said the United States has not had any contact with Israel “with regard to the question of a trade or a proposed trade" Israel said it would consider freeing the 400 if the United States asked for its help Commenting on Israeli demands that any request to the release of the 400 Arab prisoners should be done in an “orderly manner" Berri said: “Once the Islamic Jihad to the Liberation of Palestine releases its four hostages then I will ask the International Red Cross or a friendly country to start this process “This has been done in the past and it ean be done again" said Berri in reference to the exchange in June 1985 of 40 Americans held on board a hijacked TWA plane in Beirut in to some 700 Arab prisoners - budget reductions have adversely affected faculty performance on the Job — a general feeling of mimiImmi with the current budget retrenchment process and the perceived fairness of the process that was used at USU — and very few faculty members at USU believe that the current retrenchment proceas will result in a higher quality university On the more positive side Hibner said untenured faculty ratings on questions about being hired has improved considerably since a similar survey wu given fouryears ago Hibner said he was surprised about and unsure what the results mean on the ' i ‘ V -
