Show 24—The Herald Journal Logan Utah Thursday April 19 1984 Osteoporosis can be prevented Q Why do older people get so many broken bones? Is there anything we can do about it? A You’re probably heard since childhood that calcium is essential for the maintenance of strong bones Unfortunately by the age of 85 or 40 most people experience a loss of calcium and in turn a gradual thinning of bones This condition referred to as osteoporosis is usually painless until a audden bump or fell causes a fracture As the disease progresses and the bones become more porous and brittle fractures are more likely Mon than 15 million Americans suffer from osteoporosis — snd about 1 million bones tweak each year as a result Women are eight times more likely to develop it than men partly because they have less bone mass to begin with and partly because of hormonal changes I don’t want to paint too bleak a picture though Osteoporosis isn’t an inevitable part of aging There are ways of preventing the loss of calcium and slowing the progress of osteoporosis mice it has occurred One of the best is to increase your calcium intake According to the American Health Foundation some of the best sources of diuretics taken for the treatment of use of corhypertension the long-tertisone and aluminum medication for heartburn Your doctor can best advise you of the hazards these substances pose The US Department of Health and Human Services reports that extensive research is now being conducted on osteoporosis In fact earlier this month a panel of medical experts and public representatives assembled at the national Institutes of Health and Bethesda Md to discuss the cause prevention and treatment of osteoporosis While we await the report of their Tara Robinson ’Lisa Russell Oren Lewis findings experiements are currently testing the effects of calcium supplements hormone treatments and other forms of therapy for osteoporsis But for now as with so many other health problems a bit of prevention is by far the best cure If you have a question for Claude Pepper please send it to “Ask Claude Pepper’’ Room 715 House Office Building Annex 1 Washington DC 20515 Volume salmon and dark green leafy vegetables such as collard greens kale turnip greens and broccoli The calcium obtained from food is the best for absorption Direct calcium in the form of tablets is necessary if the above foods aren’t available One thousand milligrams of calcium per day is concsldered the minimum daily figure for seniors and 1500 milligrams per day is the requirement if the loss of calcium has already taken place g Physical activity is also good for bones as is sunshine because it helps the body manufacture vitamin D necessary for the absorption of calcium Then we have the blockers of calcium absorption: excessive animal protein salt coffee and alcohol Smoking is a great inhibitor of absorption Some medication isn’t good for absorption of calcium These include certain
