sports writer If you ask Logan Grizzly coach Stuart Howell no matter how you do “a win is a win is a win” it Logan High needed some clutch hitting from Rick Thorne and Derek Matlock to overcome a g to win deficit with a five-ruover rival Sky View their first region game Wednesday at Glen Worthington Park But there were some anxious moments for Howell and the Grizzlies In the top of the seventh with Logan clinging to the one-ru-n lead Sky View’s Dennis Elwood reached second on a throwing error by LHS Brian Soderquist With only one-oand nobody forcing him Elwood tried to reach third on a grounder to shortstop Thorne and the Grizzly senior made a perfect throw to third nailing the Bobcat for the second out Robyn Craig followed the running miscue with a double that would have scored ground-rul- e Elwood — had he stayed — and tied the game The next hitter hit back to the mound and the game was Logan's “That's a heck of a way to lose a game on a ground-rul- e double" said Howell “I sympathize and empathize with (Sky View) coach (Joe) Robertson and coach (Clyde) Nelson because that's a tough way to lose But on the other hand I'm darn happy to win it A win is a win is a win no matter how you hosted its first track meet of the season Wednesday finishing third to Bear River and Logan The Bears racked up seven firsts and 57 points while Logan took five firsts and came away with 53 points Sky View's Eric Robertson and Bob Durtschi accounted for four of the Bobcats' five first place finishes and led the hosts to 29 points In girls' competition however Sky View dominated with 90 points Bear River tallied 47 and Logan with just six entrants i earned 23 points The Bears' Brett Payne and Durtschi were triple winners Payne taking the 110 meter hijgh hurdles the long jump and the shotput while Durtschi prevailed in the mile the 800 meters and the 3000 meters Robertson won the 100 meters and the medley relay team also came through for the Bobcats Logan earned first places in the 200 meters with Jon Shaw the 400 meters with Eric Johnson the discus with Dennis Wildman the pole vault with Rulon Wood and the 1600 meter relay with Kattia Pheng Johnson Scott Clayton and Shaw Girls'
