Show 2—The Herald Journal Logan Utah Friday April 6 1984 Franklin residents look at Hansen differently By Robert Merrill Franklin Co staff writer PRESTON — A number of Franklin County residents feel 2nd District Congressman George Hansen may not be able to win this year because of a jury verdict Monday that found him guilty of federal ethics crimes Hansen was found guilty of four criminal counts of filing false financial disclosure statements by failing to report nearly 8334000 in loans and transactions Hansen a seven-terRepublican from Idaho’s 2nd District who represents Franklin County is the first elected official to be prosecuted and convicted under the 1978 Ethics in Government Act m Lowell Castleton Preston “At first Hansen said everything was just an oversight Later he said he based his transactions on the advise of his legal counsel" Castleton said he thinki Hansen will win if he decides to run “There’s a vote in southeastern large Idaho that Hansen could probably woo” Jeff Olson Preston said he thinks it’s unfortunate a congressional representative from Idaho would put himself in a position that could get him in trouble with the law “I personally don’t like the thoughts of being represented by someone convicted of breaking the law" he said “I still have some question in my mind whether Hansen is quilty or not I’m going to have to study the situation a lot more closely “Congressman Hansen’s conviction is a very unfortunate thing for the people of southeastern Idaho especially if it is upheld during the appeal process” said Steve Norton Clifton “I feel that Hansen’s chances for have been dealt a severe blow by the conviction They are not good at this point” The defensive attitude of Hansen during the trial and after his conviction is very disturbing said Jeniene Adamson Franklin “I really don’t know what the conviction will do to Hansen’s political future But it's going to make me look at the man in a whole different light" she said “The fact that Hansen’s story changed throughout the course of the court proceedings disturbs me more than anything" said - now" said Joyce Wiliams Western “On one hand I can’t believe Hansen is dumb enough to get into a situation like he stands convicted of On the other a jury has heard the evidence and found him guilty" “I feel kind erf bad for Hansen and his family But I think he brought this on himself I think he’s guilty" said Stewart Buttars Weston “If he does decide to run I don’t thidk he will win And if by some chance he did it would be a disaster for the people of southeastern Idaho” Hansen has done a good job of fighting big government for the people of Idaho and has accomplished a lot when it comes to holding taxes down according to Wendell Smith Riverdale “But the conviction is going to hurt his chances of really bad" Rep George Hansen says he’s not ready to quit may seek 8th term POCATELLO Idaho (UPI) -Rep George Hansen a convicted felon says he’s “not ready to quit" and may seek an eighth term The Idaho Republican told reporters gathered at Pocatello Thursday night that he had not decided whether to run but strongly hinted he was leaning in that direction “If the voters want me to continue on as one whose been there and knows how to get something done it will happen" he said “I'm not prepared to quit" After speaking at a news conference the fcongressman sequestered himself with Republican Central Committee members who were to vote on whether to support Hansen should he run again Hansen has until April 13 to file for Idaho’s May primary He again blasted the US Justice Department alleging they used selective prosecution to convict him of violating the Ethics in Government Act “The government is more interested in making sure tax forms are filled out correctly instead of going after rapists and murderers” he said Earlier Thursday Hansen’s lawyers attempted to explain to the Central Committee why the ultraconservative was convicted A US District
