Show Herald Journal Logan Utah Thursday January 16-- The o Happenings 26 1984 i Parkinson honored as ‘Elect Lady’ Harris Swaner correspondent By Ruth Leah Dunford Parkinson was honored last week as Lambda Delta Sigma's "Elect Lady” of the year Mrs Parkinson was presented the award during the annual Founders Day banquet Thursday evening in the LDS Institute at Utah State University Lisa Haslam interchapter president of Lambda Delta Sigma announced the award The honor is given to "an outstanding woman in the community or in Lambda Delta Sigma Sorority whose life has been one of service and exemplary womanhood and of the sorority's ideals” Mrs Haslam noted In presenting the award Mrs Haslam described Mrs Parkinson as “a woman of high ideals whose life has been one of service and divine womanhood She is a woman who exemplifies the five ideals of Lambda Delta Sigma They are: service supporting role of woman scholarship sisterhood and Maynard Ferguson in concert HYRUM - Maynard Ferguson is coming to Cache Valley — to the Mountain Crest High School auditorium no less The famed jasx performer and his backup band will perform in Mustangland Wednesday Feb 1 at 8 pm and band director Sheri Manning and the band are assuming the entire responsibility "The cost to host Ferguson isn't cheap and it's up to us to see a good crowd is on hand to enjoy it" said Manning “We are hoping we can attract 1300 ce people" A successful draw could make the evening a profitable fundraising one for Manning and the entire Mountain Crest band program Manning would like the evening to end in the black with those dollars going to the purchase of new equipment and instruments Why would the man whose most recent notoriety was the playing of the theme song for "Rocky” want to perform in a high school auditorium? Manning doesn’t have the answer but others might "His booking sgent called and said he was interested in using our school as the site for the show” said Manning "Naturally we accepted and took over at Utah State University He has been awarded best director awards for his work at the spirituality” Mrs Parkinson is the wife of Dr Paul C Parkinson and mother of two children Helen and Paul D Parkinson Her educational accomplishments include completion of a secretarial course at LDS Business College a bachelor of science degree at USU in business education and a master of education degree in counseling and psychology at Oregon State University Mrs Parkinson's career has included work as secretary to the dean of students at Utah State University teacher at the LDS Business College executive secretary to Utah Congresman Henry Aldous Dixon dormitory residence counselor and the dean of women at USU She is currently adjunct instructor for psychology and program administrator in Academic Support Services at USU She has taken an active part in several organizations including the Logan Chapter of the American Association of University Women USU Women’s Center Advisory Board Cache Valley Health Care Foundation USU Faculty Women's League USU Alumni Council USU Institutional Council and USU Academic Affairs Committee Mrs Parkinson was selected by the Utah American Association of University Women as "woman of the year” in 1981 and was grand marshall of the USU Homecoming parade in 1983 She has served as a ward Relief Society president ward YWMIA president stake YWMIA board member education counselor in the Mt Logan Stake Relief Society and president of the Logan Utah State University 2nd Stake Relief Society She is the immediate past adviser to the at USU and is Lambda Delta Sigma Womens a in class the program Young currently teaching of her LDS ward Inter-Chapt- "My Mother’s Eyes" is a with satirical tones It is the story of relationships with a conflict involving individual rights in a family setting The play has been selected for presentation at the Utah Theatre Associatin Festival to be held at Weber State College comedy-dram- In accepting the award Mrs Parkinson said: "All of you here tonight or 'elect ladies' and I promise you many great blesssings if you live the five ideals of this sorority” She explained the date of the banquet was significant for her because it would have been her mother's birthday Her mother died 30 years ago when Mrs Parkinson was 25 "I feel my mother’s presence with me here this evening as well as at other
