Show A LESSON IN PATRIOTIC REVERENCE the other evening we were sitting in front of 0 the commandants tent at the city park talking to a group of officers of the U S A and N G U when of a sudden the first regimen Hegi nien tal band stationed in the north end of the ball park struck up the chorus of the star spangled banner the retreat signal and instantly every officer was on his feet with face turned toward the music standing like a statue scarcely breathing As the last note died away every right hand cama up sharply to the forehead in salute and then the officers resumed their easy position as they took their seats and began the conversation where it was broken off sometime later tile the incident was referred to and one ot the officers explained that it is a sold soldiers duty whenever lie he hears the star spangled banner played no matter where lie he might be to stand at t attention without breathing it if possible and salute as the strain ends the lesson was mighty impressive and the contrast of the lay people sitting carelessly about laughing laug liing talking or shouting as the case might be while the glorious hymn Is played and the military man who knows liow low to respect the flag standing at breathless attention is altogether too pronounced to even make it necessary to call attention to it |
