although seemingly regular absentee — Wichita State ' The Shockers have missed out on the NCAA championships for the second straight year because of a three-yea- r probation levied in January 1982 for recruiting violations Wichita State has now missed three possible NCAA Tournaments over the past decade because of two separate probations The most recent probation held Wichita State out of the 1982 NCAA Tournament despite its 23-- 6 record and also prevented the Shockers from participating this year despite their 26-- 3 record The sanctions however expire at the close of the current season which means Wichita State will n once again be eligible for play in KANSAS Mo BOISE (UPI) — Dlinoii Utah Washington State and Weber State will each be looking for a little national fame tonight before Missouri Valley team does not diminish the fact that the Shockers were one of the finest basketball teams in the land this winter Wichita State ran away with the Missouri Valley with a 15--1 record winning by three games over runnerup Illinois State And only three NCAA Division I teams have lost fewer overall games “This team accepted it" Wichita State Coach Gene Smithson said of the probation “This team puahed it aside These kids have a lot of pride They wanted the whole country to know they could handle adversity they weren’t going to give in to adversity We treated every game we played as if it were an NCAA Tournament game We can play with anybody in the country" Wichita State’s three losses all came on the teams — road at the hands of tournament-boun-d New Orleans (NIT) Illinois State (NCAA) and loss to Memphis State (NCAA) And the New Orleans came in the season opener when the e sewer Shockers were missing the No 3 in school history forward Antoine Carr because of a stress fracture in his right foot Carr returned seven games into the season and went on to lead the Valley in scoring with an average of 226 points per game He and fellow Wichita State forward Cliff Levingston both considered application to the 1982 NBA draft last spring Carr decided to return Levingston didn’t and went on the ninth overall pick of the draft to the Detroit Pistons Carr figures to reap even greater rewards than Levingston this swing The Houston Rockets could conceivably have the top two choices in the draff their own choice and that of the Cleveland Cavaliers and have made no secret of their desire to select Carr following the Ralph 72-6-5 all-arou- nation-leadin- 144-rebou- nd 72-7- nt 6--10 UPI Ralph Sampson stood out in a crowd JV SNii ('I J!i f it Same old Sampson Cincinnati (1958-80) and Bill Walton of UCLA done so previously In voting by (1972-7- 4) — had sports writers and broadcasters across the nation Sampson was a winner over his closest opponent He Memphis State Sam Perkins of Noth Carolina and freshman Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma ”1 think now he falls into the category of Kareem (AbduUabbar) and Walton” Virginia Coach Terry Holland said of Sampson “It’s just as important to me now as when I was a sophomore” Sampson said of the Player of the Year honor “It says a lot about our basketball program and although it’s a personal award my teammates know they share it with me “But no personal award could mean as much to me as winning the national championship That is still our goal this year There are a lot of great players in college 152 3-t- basketball today I’m happy I’ve been recognised as one of them” Since leaving high school in Harrisonburg Va four years ago Sampson has reshaped the face of basketball at Virginia This past season he kept the Cavaliers near or at the top of the national rankings But for allot Sampson’s success there have been setbacks Virginia has yet to win an NCAA title And last week the Cavaliers were beaten by North Carolina State for the championship of the Atlantic Coast Conference making it four straight years during the Sampson era Virginia failed to win the league crown But it is hard to diminish his Those who have played accomplishments against him know that best “Nobody’s looking to play Ralph Sampson” said Washington State Coach George Raveling whose team may face Virginia in the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament “That’s like a guy finishing World War I and being asked ‘Are you looking forward to World Warn’” Sampson has been more than a basketball His name has assumed the at player Virginia proportions of legend For instance on the Charlottesville campus the building he lives in is known as Ralph’s House In Sampson's last home game his No 50 was unfurled from the roof afterward and a scholarship was announced in his behalf Some wore tuxedos to the game “The main thing” Holland said “he has set a standard people can measure by in the future And not only on the Terrapins are one of four Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the NCAA tournament and Driesell said he feels his team is capable of advancing a lot farther into the tourney than some people think “We The Rockets sent scout Rudy Tomjanovich to see the forward play eight times this season and when Wichita State faced Bradley Jan 20 Houston Coach Del Harris and his entire staff were on hand at the south central Kansas town to see Carr score 29 points in a victory “Antoine is quite a specimen" Smithson said “He's quite a force on the court I doubt I've ever coached a better player I don’t think there’s a better player in the country at his position I think he’s going to the second pick in the draft at least that’s what we hear We’ve had a few coaches a few general managers and a lot of scouts on campus We've had a ton of people around here to see him” Those scouts coaches and general managers all figure to return in droves two years hence when Levingiton's replacement and Carr’s running mate at forward this winter sophomore Xavier McDaniel plays his final season “I felt we might miss that bookend-typ- e situation (with Carr) when Cliff went hardship” Smithson said “but X came on and we didn’t miss it at alL I was just hoping he might give us Cliff’s stats (lSpoint average) but X gave us that and more” g “More” equates to a per game average plus an 188 scoring average McDaniel rebounded in double figures in each of Wichita State’s first 23 games this season before foul problems limited him to 17 minutes and 6 rebounds in a game at New Mexico State But he came off the bench in that contest to tip in the deciding shot in the closing seconds of a 0 victory over the Aggies McDaniel topped 20 rebounds in six games this season including a career-hig- h 22 against Tulsa He also had a Slpoint effort against Indiana State and a game against Bradley — seeded and No 7 UCLA in the Western Regionals respectively "We’re both very similar" says Weber State coach Neil McCarthy about his 23-- 7 Wildcats and Pac-1- 0 runnerup Washington State “Neither team has a dominating player but we both have eight or nine guys who can really play together" “We’ll have two problems against Washington State" McCarthy said “First we’ll have to hold our own on rebounding to stay with them Then we’ll have to find the player with the hot shooting hand to get our offense moving” Washington State’s George Raveling agrees with McCarthy’s sixeup that the Wildcats and WSU Cougars lack players “We’re not a team with a bunch of glamour players like Virginia or North Carolina" said Raveling “We’ve got a bunch of kids who love each other and play well together” Raveling’s 2M Cougars are led by Moot-- 6 forward Steve Harriet averaging 16 points and six rebounds per game And his other big man is point guard Craig Ehlo averaging 12 points 45 assists and two steals per game The Wildcats' top players are forwards Randy Worster and Royal Edwards and center Tom Heywood — averaging 13 12 and 10 points respectively And Edwards and Heywood are both averaging seven rebounds per game But while Raveling and McCarthy only talked about their teams Illinois coach Lou Henson claims there isn’t much difference between any of the teams in the tournament at Boise State University’s new Pavilion “I can’t believe our players would look beyond Utah Thursday to play UCLA on Saturday” Henson said T‘And I’m not sure UCLA is a better team than Utah Utah is a very physical team tht will be aggressive on both offense and defense so we can’t let them intimidate us’’ “However Tm more concerned with’ our consistency than with Utah We have to have all five of our players on the floor playing welL And we have to take advantage of our height Maybe we can hurt them
