Show The Herald Journal 4— Logan Utah Thursday March 17 1983 Sunshine Terrace under voluntary review ByMalin Foster managing editor The administration and staff of Sunshine Terrace this week are wrapping up the first phase of a comprehensive program aimed at helping them identify the facility's strengths and weaknesses The program called "Quest for Qualify" is designed by the American Health Care Association to allow those directly involved with long-terhealth care facilities to take a detailed look at the Job they are doing Administrator Sara V Sinclair says that although state regulations require official evaluations of facilities such as Sunshine Terrace this review is completely voluntary "We did not have to have the state’s annual survey in 1982” she told the Herald Journal “We're very proud of that But we feel we still have a responsibility to monitor ourselves Longterm care providers are responsible for assuring the qualify of care provided in their facility We want to enhance that care and we also want to make sure employees are happy in their Jobs receive proper and helpful supervision be well educated and be aide to perforin their jobs with confidence" The Quart for Qualify review accomplishes these goals Sinclair says and provides ways for nursing homes to continue the process indefinitely Hundreds of questionnaires sent to families of Sunshine Terrace patients physicians self-apprais- al m self-evaluati- on consultants are being and to employees evaluated this week Sinclair says the return rate on the questionnaires has been excellent The program also calls for an employee evaluation of her as administrator “The questionnaires are in now and our department heads are looking at them" Sinclair says “We’re in the process now of setting goals for any changes based on the survey results we feel well need to make in our programs We'll have a plan of action very soon" In a November memorandum to her staff Sinclair described in detail the purpose of the voluntary review “Quest for Qualify is a guide for self-apprais- al care facilities" the memo says “It asks pertinent revealing questions designed to help the facility locate its good areas and areas which need improvement It represents a significant effort by the leadership of our industry towards assuring qualify care in our nursing homes The best judges of qualify care are those people who are involved in the nursing home on a daily basis I am giving each of you a challenge — let's take a critical look at what is happening here what is good what needs Improving and how we will improve it A true professional is ready willing and able to assess his work for qualify” The Utah Health Care Association an affiliate of the AHGA describes the program as "not a passive process intended to satisfy a paper requirement It is a program that requires active long-ter- m participation and a sincere desire to provide the absolute highest level of care possible It is a challenging program that demands honest and objective evaluation thoughtful planning and the support and cooperation of all the people involved with your facility It is also the most advanced thorough and successful method of evaluation ' available to long-tercare m providers” Sinclair says one of the best aspects of the program here is the attitude of employees and families There has been little if any resistance to it here “What I'm tickled about is that people are not apprehensive about this survey" she says “It's not an evaluation that seeks to blame anyone for anything It's all positive and directed to helping us identify what we have to do to improve As long as blame is not placed and people are not penalised for anything they like it" One of the areas Sinclair says she’d like to improve is family involvement "We already have a lot of family involvement but we’d like more” she says “We’re working on a new lecture program and we want to know more about what our residents would like to learn about Families and others in our community could be involved in this “Some of our residents need care all week and when the family realises this it can be pretty traumatic Family life is disrupted and there are often guilt feelings when they realise their loved one needs more care than they can 24-ho- ur Cache Library Committee Obituaries makes five recommendations bh° There needs to
