| Show FOCUS Opinion Theaters Classified ads The Herald Journal Logan Utah Sunday June 6 1982 I I i Parties on the lower floors sometimes get out of hand and the cake ends up on the face instead of in the mouth t t Battered and quiet the halls await crews and tender touch-up- s maintenance university Contracts ended Friday for the 1600 or so students living in Utah State University’s resident hall No more noise no beer parties more music No more year-en(or year-lonstrictly forbidden And at least for a few months no more complaints They are empty now d It is common practice g) almost tradition to speak unfavorably of university housing They continue that men’s trend at USU’s East High Rise a seven-stor- y resident hall Only those who have been there before seem not to mind living They after learning what it’s like from years past make educated decisions But often students who opt for student housing have few other choices And without that luxury complaining is an accepted means for easing the frustration of being “on-campu- s” somewhere they don't really want to be These incoming freshmen read colorful pamphlets sent by housing recruiters and designed to lure prospective renters Some students unwittingly fall for the PR job hook line and shag carpeting Most are not 100 percent satisfied with their choice Some make the best of it holding on enduring Others fight back with wild freshmen energy and general rowdiness It is the blend of people thrown loosely together by vague domegraphics which makes dorm life what it always has been — wild loud and at times a bit criminal A sign in the lobby of East High Rise still pleads as it has since early winter: "$500 reward for the positive identification of the person(s) who threw the couch and table down the elevator shaft of East High Rise” It was a troublesome event uncharacteristic of typical hall life say officials of the housing heirarchy It happened on a Friday night probably a party-les- s evening when residents of the building had to make do at “home” (This of course is purely speculation Everyone seems to know exactly what happened but no one is talking) Elizabeth Craney and her boyfriend Sergio Von Borries get in some study time together in his room stoiy In the spirit and vandalistic nature of youth the fifth floor couch and table were found at the bottom of the shaft Floor meetings were called designed to make students aware of the grave nature of the situation Fifth floor residents MICHAEL REBERG photograph) shouted outrage at the implications claiming themselves victims of another floor's raid The sign remains the a culprits remain at large The East High Rise is a dumping ground of sorts where stray students from across the nation are lumped together and newly Mostly freshmen the residents are young displaced from home Dorm life although unpleasant in many ways is an adventure in living for these students They make the best of what they've got Freshmen floors usually near the bottom (older quieter graduate students seek refuge on the upper levels) fraternities They dispense with the pomp become and lofty attitudes and go right to the pranks Continued on page 31 (18-1- OWEN ot trz Mcrad 9) off-col- or I r STAYNER Art work decorates the 6th and 7th floors of the building t xuna! |
