M Anderson turns 98 Sept Clara Munk Anderson ob observed observed observed ob- ob served her birthday on Saturday Sept She has seen many changes evolve during during during dur dur- ing those 98 years Here are just a few of her recollections In the southern part of ManU Mantl stood a two-room two rock house with a good basement cellar A willow fence divided the dooryard door door- yard from the flower garden where old-fashioned old pinks and candy bloomed A pole fence protected the front of the house Close to the fence was wasa a row of big cottonwood trees which gave cooling shade Bushes Bush Bush- es of gooseberries large red and white currents adorned the grounds and a large grapevine bore abundantly In the fall A peach and apple orchard covered covered covered cover cover- ed a great part of the lot Here lived the honest farmer Peter eter Munk and his wife Eunice Ann and their two little daughters daughters daugh daugh- Minerva and May Into this home a. a anew new baby sister arrived on Sept 4 1873 She had brown browneyes browneyes browneyes eyes and brown hair and they named her Clara When she was a year and a half old her mother became ill and for the next nine and one-half one years was bedfast So at a very early age Mrs Anderson became a responsible homemaker Wood was used entirely for fuel and one of her first du duties duties duties du- du ties was to bring in the nights night's supply of wood She tended the chickens and also took care of the neighbors neighbor's children for 10 a day By the time she was seven she was knitting and darnIng darning darning darn- darn Ing the socks Drinking water was dipped from the irrigation ditch Wash boards and bending backs scrubbed the clothes with homemade soap perfumed with One of her duties on Saturday Saturday Saturday Satur Satur- day was to get the lamp ready for Sunday She would take a basket of eggs to the store and get a can of coal She would trim the lamp wick so it wouldn't smoke and shine the chimney nice and bright She stood on a chair to clean the churn scour the knives and forks and brass milk bucket She looked forward to the time when she could mix the salt- salt rising bread She became a school schoolteacher teacher She has many fond recollections of students and experiences Including in including In- In the courtship of a handsome handsome hand hand- some young m man man n. n On Dec 11 1896 1696 she was married to Lewis Robert An Anderson Anderson Anderson An- An derson in the Mantl Manti Temple He died Oct 19 1968 She has six living children Luclle Luelle Keller Keller Keller Kel Kel- ler R.
