J W W. W Humphrey Hardly anyone owes any more to Mr Humphrey for countless countless countless count count- less courtesies kindnesses and downright practical help than do I. I Through all the tha years when we were studying and mapping the Wasatch Plateau Mr Humphrey never failed us in all manner of administration from minor permissions to do this or that or to use forest facilities out to the solution of serious problems problem And above all of it was his utterly lovable personality I literally never passed the door of the forest fores office whether or not I hadan had hadan hadan an axe to grind without stopping stopping stopping stop stop- ping in just to say hello it always gave me a lift to beIn bein be bein in his presence if for only afew a afew afew few minutes What a wonderful man maid And as I think of these things I can hardly avoid saying something something some some- something thing of of the sort about Mr Humphreys Humphrey's right hand man inthe Inthe in inthe the office S. S S S. S Van Boskirk who likewise never failed us But I have already spoken my piece about Van at the memorial memorial memorial mem mem- orial service for lor him that hat was held In the West Ward chapel Then too the rangers Byron Howard Dave Williams Mern MerrUl Merrill Mer Mer- n rill rUl it Anderson Ed Cox Wells Thursby gentlemen all without exception interested in our work and eager to cooperate I can hardly avoid the lee feeling ling that the good will and general attitude attitude attitude atti atti- tude of these were at least in part stimulated by bythe bythe bythe the example and compelling personality of their boss I first met Mr Humphrey In 1921 at the old Duzette Hotel In Emery I shall never forget one evening In the lobby there when wl he regaled H. H I. I Smith engineer U. U S. S Bureau of Mines Raymond Haseltine field assistant U. U S. S Geological cal Survey and me with an enthusiastic account of Bryce Canyon that resulted In a trip down there by the three of us in October driving our Dodge truck up the creek bed in Red Canyon climbing down monkey monkey- wise on a knotted rope thoughtfully thoughtfully thoughtfully thought thought- fully provided by some cowboy in preference to a log ladder that looked too rotten and rickety to be trusted losing a lot of time in late afternoon trying to find the slot down which we had come going Into many wrong ones first and finally enjoying the hospitality for the night of Rubey's tent camp on the rim just about where Sunset Point now Is What an experience I But I wonder how many good citizens of Utah realize how much Mr Humphrey did to make Bryce known and avail available able to the public This really deserves an article all Its own and Mr H Humphrey Is the manto man manto manto to write It Well all honor hono respect reverence yes and love to a person I shall now dare to call a Grand Old Man EDMUND M.
