Show I r STAhLE By LARRY STAHLE i Wife 1 I dreamed last night that you were the most generous gen gen- l ic erous man In the world and had given me a bill bUl to buy some new dresses Surely you wouldn't do anything to alter that opinion Husband Certainly not Just to show you Im I'm as generous generous generous gen gen- erous as you dreamed I am you can keep that hundred Last weekend we decided to steal away from work for an hour and steam up Into the mountains We chose TwelveMile TwelveMile TwelveMile Twelve- Twelve Mile Canyon with Pinchot Flat as our destination During the few moments that we had allowed ourselves on the July holiday we ate our first picnic lunch of the summer in the mountains Then we made madea a s small mall fire in the grill grUl area and roasted a few lows After we had been there about a half halt hour a Forest Service truck drove up and out hopped Ranger Allred and his sidekick sidekick side side- kick Evan Lowry The next few moments I had hada a good chat with Mr Allred about the shape which the ManU Mantl Canyon road has been in this summer This was one of ot my topics last week in this column After discussing the matter for a few tew moments I suddenly realized that they felt that I Iwas Iwas Iwas was blaming local ice personnel for tor the condition of the road This was not my intention at all I hope that you understand that the meager amount of funds allocated to the ManU Mantl Ranger District is so meager that if you were to put the whole sum sumin sumin sumin in the bank the Interest would not hardly even buy a loaf of ot bread To complicate matters part 7 of ot the revenue has to be used on erosion control sign maintenance maintenance maintenance main main- construction of ot new roads etc so by the time you get to the grading part the meager rations have become very slender The citizens are also partly J to blame for the condition of it h. the canyon roads in Sanpete County I have heard several people openly brag that they were in one of the canyons in one of their wheel four-wheel drive rigs when the surface was wet They tell how they took th the time to grind all four wheels deep Into the earth to get moving moving moving ing in a hurry Their tracks then serve as excellent canals during the next storm getting a bit deeper each time the water washes through them Ranger Allred told of a man who just the day after atter the road was graded was caught ina In Ina Ina a situation where the roads were a bit wet and did his part to undo the grading work If we are really serious about upgrading our canyon roads whether they be In Ephraim Manti ManU or Gunnison we must appeal to the people who hold the purse strings We had all better sit down and write the regional office of the Forest Service or our congressional delegation In Washington asking asking asking ask ask- ing that funds be made available available available avail avail- able to keep the roads in the proper condition year old I fI I aint never gonna get married year Seven-year-old Why year old Ive al already already already al- al ready 11 lived ved too long with married people Quite often we receive notification no notification notification no- no that people who once 11 lived ved In Sanpete have ach achieved eved fame through some endeavor Two such people have been cited in the past few weeks for doing something many of ofus ofus ofus us would not do Editors Editor's note The followIng following following follow follow- ing letter was sent in by Mrs Jane Nielson former Ephraim Ephraim Ephraim Eph- Eph raim resident now residing at E. E 3rd Emmett Ida Mrs Nielson reports that the boy spoken about in the following letter is her son Jeff of ot whom she is very proud She asked that her herbest herbest herbest best wishes be extended to her many Ephraim friends The following letter appear appear- ed In the Emmett newspaper recently Dear Editor I have heard so much about the young folks going to the dogs these days I just want to tell the world there Is one Emmett Emmett Emmett Em Em- mett boy that has had the upbringing upbringing upbringing up bringing to be kind to elderly people I went to see my doctor Monday and was vias trying to carry home some groceries I got asfar as asfar asfar far as I could go I couldn't leave my groceries on the sidewalk sidewalk sidewalk side side- walk and come home or I couldn't stand there In the hot sun Two boys came along on bi bi- bi cycles The oldest one saw I Iwas Iwas Iwas was sick He asked me if he could help and pack my grocerIes groceries grocer grocer- ies home for me I greatly appreciated this I never knew the boy He was I judge about 12 years rears old I didn't get his name but he did tell me they had just moved to Emmett from Utah Im I'm a woman of 78 years and I can only think of what may have happened to me if he hadn't come along I firmly believe the good Lord sent him to help me I also believe there are other nice young folks in Emmett I dont don't know If I had the mind to thank him for being helpful to those who cannot help them them- selves If It he should read this I want to thank him and his good parents for bringing him up to be kind to elderly people and showing respect for the aged Mrs Belle Girdner Way back in June une Seth Madsen Madsen Madsen Mad- Mad sen son of Mr and Mrs Spencer Spencer Spencer Spen Spen- J. J Madsen of Manti stopped on the highway near Little Rock Arkansas to help some people who were having car trouble The family that Seth helped were quick to send a letter leller to Seth's parents telling them how they felt about their son and what he had done for them The letter read as follows Hi Mr Madsen This is the first time in to my 50 years of or living that I have written a letter of this nature Yes I was honored to meet your son Seth on the highway between Little Ro Rock k Ark and Memphis Tenn My car ar had broken down and with me were my wife wIre and anti five children age I 11 through 3 years We were on our way to visit my sister in St. St Louis Mo Yes s this was Sunday June 7 He picked I me up drove me to a town about 25 miles away walled waited I 25 minutes until I 1 got a fuel pump for my car ar drove me back bat bark k to my car and helped me put the pump on my car then followed me until I got well wellon on my way I Mr Spencer Spener all I can say is that you and your wife surely I have given this country a fine fineman fineman fineman man and I just had to drop I you a line to let you know that I am telling all my friends I about your son and you too And believe me I am mentioning mention mention- ing your name and Manti ManU Utah What I am trying to say is that I wish the newspapers and TV stations would tell this country country country coun- coun try about boys like Seth In Instead inI instead in- in stead of our sorry minority I of hippies I am not too good with words I on paper but God bless you both and I only hope that my I five 1 ve measure half halt way up toI to Seth I Oray Gray G. G Rodrigue Port Arthur Texas Johnson returned to his na native native na- na tive town after alter some years abroad Has he changed much asked one who had not yet seen him No but he thinks he has In what way He persists In talking about what a fool he used to be I guess it about time to give I another overdue long-overdue pat on the back I only wish I knew who I to award the plaudits Way back on July the I festivities in Mantl Manti were more than keeping most of the I citizenry of Manti Mantl Ephraim and Sterling busy A short time before the fireworks fireworks fire fire- works display was to get underway underway under under- way you could see small faint fires appearing on the hillside to the east of ManU Mantl As the night grew darker the small fires grew brighter It seems as though some In Individual individual in- in who I dont don't know took the time out of his busy schedule schedule schedule sched sched- ule to go up to the area where the M is located on the east mountains arrange and light fires on the M. M Everyone seemed to be very Impressed by this gesture Although Al Although Although Al- Al though I cant can't call this person by name I want to extend my personal thanks for a job well done and hope that though he may wish to remain anonymous he ascends the hill next July and lights the M. M Now dont don't worry about your son for one minute the doctor reassured the anxious anxious ious mother Its perfectly normal for the boy to like making mud pies Well tWell responded the mother I cI just dont don't like It and and neither does his wife The pageant is over The scenery has been taken down The chairs returned The director di director director di- di rector has returned to her home in Salt Lake The cast members are erasing the bags from under their sleepless eyes But there are still sUll a few reminders of the pageant ly lying lying lying ly- ly ing around One of the biggest reminders remind remind- ers Is the box load of lost and found items that Morgan Dyreng Dyreng Dyreng Dy- Dy reng is packing around not to mention the eye glasses and keys we have at the Messenger Messenger Messenger Mes Mes- office We also have some vivid memories of the past week in which we took part in the annual an annual annual an- an nual pageant We will wUl never forget the cars that were still streaming out of Manti 45 minutes minutes minutes min min- utes after alter the end of the per per- Also we cant can't erase the memory of cars parked Out on the Main Highway about a half mile from the pageant site There are a few unusual comments comments com cam ments which we have read or heard since the pageant also One year old boy put it iti i right Ight on the line when he said saidI saidI I I liked it Another pei person son cut tut loose with I I wish I could have seen better hetter Too many tress etc etc But the one that up everything that has l been een said or written noted The pageant was vas well written but hut too lou well attended A couple of or our visitors we we- impressed with the lights on onti tl temple They thought a wonderful that the pageant officials officials of official of- of would go to all the trouble liou- liou ble bie to erect lights on the structure struCture ture just for the pageant Probably the thing that will remain with me for a long longtime ti tune time me occurred at the end of the Friday performance My l parents parents par par- who live in Bountiful had said that they may consider coming down but hut didn didn't give me much hope because they dont don't like traveling after dai dark k After the end of the pageant I was standing on the stage at attired attired attired at- at tired in my fine Cine raiment with my first Hist quality Phyllis Diller blonde wig atop my dome lle when who steps forward but my dad and mom It was hard for me meto meto meto to decide if they were going to laugh or not when they saw me up close Small boys boy's definition of a conscience Something that makes you tell your mother before your sister does Anybody who thinks everyone today Is dishonest doesn't know Don Edwards of Gunnison Last Wednesday Don passed a first class test to prove the point As he was piloting his painting painting painting paint paint- ing truck along the highway between ManU Mantl and Ephraim he saw a small object lying in the middle of the road So he stopped stopped stopped stop stop- ped to investigate As he reached the spot he recognized the item as a wallet Quickly he searched through It to try and find out who it be belonged belonged belonged be- be longed to but all he could find was a California address Further Investigation revealed reveal reveal- ed that the wallet contained in cash This simply put Don in a frenzy He galloped back to his truck and turned the vehicle around and headed back for Manti ManU to turn his find over to Sanpete County Sheriff Grant K Lar- Lar sen Sheriff Larsen did some checking and found out that the wallet was actually the property of Susan Jensen who was In ManU Mantl for tor a visit and to see the Mormon Miracle pageant Sheriff Larsen noted that it Isn't very often orten that someone will wUl bring in a wallet with that much cash In it So you see if you think that everyone is a crook you had better go meet Don Edwards When his engine conked out a pilot landed his plane on a freeway He jumped out and went over to a car that had pulled off the road out of his way intending to ask for help But the woman sitting next to the driver of the car shouted shout shout- ed Well tWell get out of the way Mister If you will show us where to go My husband Is the only driver In the world who could start out on a freeway freeway free free- way and end up in the middle of an airport A confirmed optimist is a fellow who gets married at age 93 and buys a house near neara a school |
