Show As we look forward to the public meeting on July 22 regarding re re- garding consolidation of our schools In the South Sanpete School District there are some considerations Important to the people of Ephraim that seem to have been completely overlooked overlooked over over- looked In the proposals put forward as a result of the study If U education of the student Is the primary goal of education education tion It seems there should be some concise evidence of better better bet bet- ter curriculum planning to warrant warrant war war- rant any kind of change It would be too bad to get caught In a change for the sake of change movement The more we read and study the proposals of that committee commit commit- tee published In the Ephraim En Enterprise on July 3 the more difficult It Is to see that the advantages might outweigh the disadvantages Looking at It from an Ephraim standpoint because we lack Manti Mantl or Gunnison Gunnison Gun- Gun nison perspective It seems It would be almost total loss for forthe forthe forthe the Ephraim school situation with very little gain particularly particular particular- ly If the first option were put Into effect Without study of the complete complete complete com com- proposal and judging from the newspaper report of the Utah State University recommendations recommendations recommendations It seems that some programs that have been Important important important Im im- to junior high students would be completely scrapped without mention and Bantam Basketball which Is picking up In all of the areas around would have to be discontinued In Ephraim Eph Eph- raim because when the junior high gym Is torn down the youngsters will have no place to play Maybe that Is not Im Important important important im- im It seems so to the young students and their parents parents parents par par- but consider the junior high school It hasn't been too long ago that residents of Ephraim united to construct one of the finest year-round year swimming pools inthe In Inthe inthe the state Since that time junior high students have had the opportunity opportunity opportunity op op- op- op to have swimming classes each year they are In junior high school This has been an advantage to the student and also a benefit to the pool With the obvious need for continued continued continued con con- emphasis on on physical fitness In our schools why Is IsIt isit isit It good judgement to take our junior high students away from the swimming classes where all of the students benefit In favor of giving newer shop facilities facilities fa fa- fa to a few Then too what will happen to our summer band program Will Ephraim junior high students students students stu stu- dents be required to go to Gunnison If U and since saving money Is the stated objective of this proposed consolidation they discontinue use of the Ephraim Ephraim Eph Eph- raim shop facility at a savings of there would be no permanent band headquarters In Ephraim Ephraim would have no summer band program no band at all and only the most dedicated would travel the necessary miles to Gunnison to participate Under Disadvantages 7 1 it indicates that there is some question that proposed facilities would be adequate to house students It seems less than wise to rearrange housing of students in the district knowing that facilities would not be beade- beade adequate adequate ade ade- quate and to tear down or close off some existing facilities We ought to take a good look at soaring building costs and consider consider consider con con- sider Improving existing facilities ties before we move too far too fast What will happen to closed off oU buildings or portions portions portions por por- of buildings The natural result Is that they will become bat hatcheries and who needs more bats LINNIE M.
