Show Report From Washington BY REP LAURENCE J. J BURTON BURTaN During the last couple of weeks V a lot of the news from Washington Washing Washing- ashington ton has been focused on the i House Committee on Un Ameri can Activities or more commonly commonly commonly com com- known as HUAC The committee com com- committee has been investigating the violence which erupted at Chicago's Chicago's Chicago's Chi Chi- cagos cago's Dem Democratic venti on in which many students fl were involved Some and converged on the House hearings led by self-proclaimed self student leaders Jerry Rubin and Abbie Abble Hoffman Incidentally Hoffman found himself behind bars one day He wore a shirt made from froman an A American mexican flag and under abill a abill abill bill which I sponsored anyone who desecrates the flag nag could be fined jailed or both Now its it's understandable why the reporters give a handful o of f these kooks all the publicity after all the papers have to besold be besold besold sold and aM these hippies and are making all the new news But its it's unfortunate that the majority 1 of stud students dont don't get the major headlines for the good they are i accomplishing in school For instance recently I re received received re- re a couple of letters from 1 students at Pleasant Grove High School American History teacher teacher teacher tea tea- cher Jack Hill told me that the first three weeks of school were devoted to a study of four issues in this years year's political campaign Vietnam law and order gun control con con- and civil rights The class was divided into conservatives and liberals who researched their subjects and then presented E their views to the class for discussion discussion discussion dis dis- and aId debate Most of these students are 16 and naturally cannot vote But the students are still interested enough to get involved with the issues and politics of the day These are the students who should get the publicity They're the ones doing something with their lives You might be interested in the results of the class The Conservatives Conservatives Con Con- led by Richard Brown reported the the U. U S. S should declare war on North Norh Vietnam and push for a military military military mili mili- tary victory They oppose gun controls support civil rights a along as ar long as the rights of others are not infringed upon and back the police in controlling riots The Conservatives also think the courts are protecting the criminals criminals criminals crimi crimi- nals too much The Liberals led by Tom Wilson Wilson Wilson Wil Wil- son said they thought there should be an out all-out bombing of North Vietnam along with sending sending sending sendo send- send o ing troops into the North The students backed demonstrations as long as they didn't get out of hand they felt the Negro should be given equal rights and they voted to register all guns along with banning mail order guns Naturally the students will reflect re reflect reflect re- re some of their parents' parents philosophies philosophies phi phi- s in many cases But the students did work constructively in researching the issues and that's something more of ofus us ought to do There are several bills to lower the voting age to 18 before the House Judiciary Committee The leading Presidential candi- candi lates have said they favor placing the age limit at 18 Q Actually there are four states which have lowered the voting age Kentucky and Georgia where the limit is 18 Alaska where the age is 19 and Hawaii where the vote is given to those who are 20 Those who oppose lowering the age argue a person hasn't matured matured matured ma ma- enough to make gen gent choice at the voting booth Many fear repeats of the Columbia Columbia Columbia Colum Colum- bia and Berkeley student demonstration demonstration demonstration demon demon- and aM believe a student vote would be for radical changes rather than mature decisions Proponents think the youth ot of today are more educated than they've ever b been n and able ble tomake tomake to tomake make wise decisions And there are those who say If a man is old enough to fight for his coun coun- try and am perhaps lose his life then he is old enough to vote The arguments will be aroun around d for a long time to come The Th e |
