Show Page Fourteen The Mt. Con Mine Exec Slated To Speak LAS VEGAS, Nev. one-thir- d October Lake City, Utah I, 1955 Pacific Northwest Builds 1,446 Mile Gas Carrier Changes in mining methods at the Mountain Con Mine will be described here Tuesday before delegates attending the 1955 Convention of the American Mining Congress by B. OLeary, mine superintendent, Anaconda Co., Butte, Mont. Within the last three years a rock bolt program has been instituted, OLeary said, which has resulted in cutting out of all excavation necessary for required sill advance, and has served to practically eliminate timber. At the same time, he explained a system of horizontal cut and fill stoping was introduced which made use of rock bolts for ground support and smelter tailing for fill. As a result of these changes. Mountain Oon was able to show an increased tonnage per stope, he stated, and decreased costs in per foot of sill advance, explosives per ton, timber, and in total cost, including wages per ton. The new mining methods also included a greatly improved ventilation system, he added, which despite temperatures of 130 degrees, allowed concentrated mining over greater areas than ever before. Veiton JIHseial Survey, Sill Progress on the 1,446 mile Pacific Northwest ' Pipeline is being watched closely by the mining and oil world. The project is bringing the promise of a transport system for gas as well as a supply line. It has started a major revival along its western states route. Monthly progress on the pipeline is averaging 150 miles regularly. This is expected to increase as more construction schedules, or "spreads are activated. The pipeline has brought with it many changes for the west. Increased population, shifting as the pipeline progresses, is bring new revenue into the states. The project is providing innumerable jobs for construction workers. When completed the pipeline will be one of the major sources of petroleum develop- ment throughout die west Grand Junction, Colo., is headquarters for one major section of the line. Immersed in the uranium boom, Grand Junction has still, felt the effects of the pipeline project, particularly in hotels, motels, restaurants and transportation. The effect is even more evident in communities such as Rangely where supervisory and construction people live as the work progresses. Every phase of the work is closely supervised by. the inspectors and engineers of the Fish Northwest Constructors of Houston, the company engineering the line. Including Fish Northwest per. sonnel and construction workers approximately 1600 people direct WE SALUTE THE GROWTH OF ly concerned with building this portion of the line are employed in the Grand Junction Division.
