According to the reports submitted to the Utah State Board of Health by local health officers for the week ending December 13, the epidemic of influenza continues to spread throughout the State. Because of the fact that physicians are called to care for only a small percentage of the patients,' it is difficult to even estimate the actual number of cases. A survey of the larger schools of Salt Lake City and County reveals the fact that from 20 to 50 per cent of the school students are absent. While many of these absences are due to t;e fact that the students have temporary Christmas work the great majority of them represent cases A moderate esti of influenza. mate of the cases, places Hie number in Salt Lake City at 5.000 and between 2,000 and 2,500 in Salt Lake County. Provo City reports 500 cases. Reports from local health officers and a check with the school officials of Ogden City and Weber County indicate that the epidemic has not as yet reached that area. There are apparently a number of counties in the Stnte that have thus far escaped the epidemic. Doctor D. Keith Barnes, director of Davis County Health Department, reports that in the southern part of Davis County approximately 25 per cent of the CAITTFTRVIl! population are affected while 10 per cent are affected in the Central portion of the County, but that the epidemic has apparently not reached the northern part of the County. Judging from reports from physicians and school officials tne disease is still or a rather mua nature. However, three or Imr daya of Illness from the infection leaves the patient extremely weak.
