Show THE PARK Wednesday, December 11, 1371 CITY conn Page IS Nothing is sacred to the man, not even the film industry, and usually his barbs are devastating and right on target. Mike Nichols and Elaine May were one of the best comedy teams of the early sixties. When the team broke up. Nichols turned his talents to directing, to the delight of the film lovers. Nichols first film. The Graduate, was so successful in both monetary and artistic levels that Nichols was able to beat out no less a film legend than Orson Welles for the right to direct Joseph Hellers' Catch-2Hence, the 16th through the 19th is an excellent time to look at the work of a man who may well end up in the Parthenon of American directors. The Graduate is one of the mast successful first films ever made. Considered quite daring when it was first released, the film seems a bit mild after many of the taboos and conventions were crumbled film by film. The film still is a humorous and sensitive look at the plight of a socially backward young man who falls in love with the daughter of his father's business partner. What seems to be a simple love story becomes complicated by the fact that the young college grad is also having an affair with the partners wife. The film's ending made the entire film seem mellow and optimistic, a quality that helped endear it to the audiences. The Graduate is Dustin Hoffman's first significant film and also features a soundtrack by Simon and Garfunkel. Icing on the cake. If The Graduate is a mellow flick, Carnal Knowledge is much more a cutting film. The cast of the film-ja- ck and Candice Bergen-a- re Nicholson, Art Garfunkel, called on to perform in what is a sharp psychological study of two men trying to deal with the myths and realities of human sexuality. The film's comic moments are sad at the same time, since in so many cases the stars are manipulating other people. Nichols let another side of his directing talent flow when he made Carnal Knowledge, and this effort results in what is probably the best film he has made so far. If I write about Catch-2- 2 this week, Ill have very little to write about next week. Catch-2- 2 is a bit too complicated to tack onto the end of a column. You're just going to have to sit on the edge of your seat till next week, Zelda Froderbitsusky ! 2. by Alan Crooks Quiller is Back with a harrassing car in the middle of the desert at speeds approaching insanity. In another memorable scene, Quiller drives into the range of his would-b- e assasin, and due to Hall's exquisite sense of timing, the reader is more nervous than Quiller when it's over. It is this creation of scenes that gives Hall the edge over most of his competition. The reader rides with Quiller into the sights of the long gun" instead of merely reading the report of how it happened. Since the success of such is year or two ago, a young author published ' a A sophisticated the whodunit" in area cloak-and-dagg- er called The Quiller Memorandum. In it, Adam Hall established a personality which, given some luck, could be the fictional agent to replace James Bond. And while that may seem quite presumptive, I do wish my readers to know that I dsicovered Bond in 1958. Which means I have a 50 percent chance of being right in this forecast. (set-piece- reasons for making such a prediction are several. First of all, Hall is a better writer than Fleming, in my California Split, the newest Robert Altman film, leads off another excellent week at the Opera House. Other films of interest include Blazing Saddles and a double feature of The Graduate and Carnal Know ledge : In other words, the whole schedule this week. California Split is probably destined to be Robert Altmans most successful film(financiaUy) since MASH. Altman's films have been consistently of an excellent quality, although the films melancholy, low-ke- y nature did not attract the crowds that his first comedy, MAS1I, brought to the theaters. His films have made him one of the United States foremost directors, but except for film freaks, the crowds ignored him. California Split has all the ingredients to reestablish Altman as a financially attractive director instead of a director with an art cult appeal. The film is a comedy, starring two excellent conic actors, George Segal and Elliot Goukl. Altman's films are always loose and freewheeling, but in California Split he again has the vehicle and the actors to duplicate the frantic pace and satire that made MASH seem revolutionary. Some critics have condemned the film for a lack of depth, but, as in most of his films, nothing save for moments of pure humor is blatant about the film. A difficult film to pass up. Am-Margr- s) Blazing Saddles is the product of Mel Brooks warped mind and, therefore, is often hilarious. Brooks is essentially a verbal humorist, and does not have the best sense of timing when he is directing a film, but his sense of humor is irreverent and crazy enough to keep the audience delighted most of the time. What would Christmas be without candy, cookies and kids? If you have the kids, let them help you make the candy and cookies. Most of the following recipes are old favorites with the younger set, and all are easy, so even the littlest hands can share in the preparations. PEANUT BRITTLE sugar 1 tbsp. butter 2 c. salted Virginia peanuts 2 c. entirely on stylistic ability, suffice it to say that Hall is very polished. opinion. He severely limits his boundaries, so that in- of timing also accounts for his being able to on the end tag an of the main plotand get away with it. In The Tango Briefing, Quiller indeed discovers the cargo of the missing airplane, at the cost of temporary insanity (not to mention nearly getting killed by opposing parties ). And for the reader, the plot seems to have cone to a conclusion. However, just when he thinks its all over, Quiller is asked to return to the downed craft and dispose of the highly anti-clima- x puter: a brain plus the machinery (the organism). Its a good pipy, and adds dimension to still yet another spy story. Secondly, Hall has a feeling for the exotic and the bizarre. I dont mean that the reader can't figure out what is going to happen because he can, given a little practice. What I mean is that Hall is able to work out the crescendos in a laudable fashion. Quiller is merely the vehicle. Hall's new novel, The is Tango Briefing, reminiscent p(t his ; earlier . ' work, yet it adds some dimension to his hero. Quiller is called in to determine the cargo of a plane which has gone down in the Algerian dangerous, highly secret cargo. And he is told, although he already realizes it, that it will mean his death. There simply seems to be no escape route. Yet, in spite of that reality, Quiller does and return, adequately with a disposes of the cargo atomic small-powere- d device, no less, and manages to get out alive. . . HowJ.Tbat, my faithful, readers, you will have to discover for yourselves. But to spce the cake a bit, let me add that the trigger mechanism is broken in his second trip to the airplane, so that he is forced to set it off manually. And we all know that there is little escape from a manually detonated atomic device. Now, if that doesnt whet your curiosity, nothing will. Happy reading. desert. Unfortunately for Quiller, several other spy cells want to know about the airplane, and are con- stantly giving him trouble. One of the finest scenes in the book occurs before he ever gets to the downed aircraft. As time passed and my interest and education and involvement with art grew, and as I traveled more, I had many more happy experiences seeing favorite paintings and pieces of sculpture in the flesh, so to speak. One other experience that will always be with me occurred a little more than a year ago. I had made a concerted effort to travel to Berlin.
