Show sMUH Wednesday, September 25, 1974 Page 2 Theriot Spring Progress ITS ABOUT TIME President Fords conditional amnesty plan deserves the support of the American public. As opposed to the unconditional pardoning of former President Nixon, amnesty for Vietnam War draft evaders and deserters will have a healing effect on national wounds left open at the wars end (for Americans). Those who think the war resisters should be punished for their cowardice should think again. There are thousands of men throughout the country who avoided participation in the Vietnam tragedy but who did so through devious or disguised methods. Consider the masses who flocked to their local reserve units when the time approached for their induction into the regular armed forces. Think of the many who made college a career until they were a safe distance from the clutches of the draft. Or how about those unpunished patriots who scoured the countryside for a sympathetic doctor who would verify that his patient was unfit for past that military duty. And it was in the marriage mills were catering to those young men who miraculously fell in love and decided to marry just before they were due to be called by Uncle Sam. Drugs which caused temporary high blood pressure were much in demand around physical time. And let us not forget those emotionally distraught would-b- e soldiers who underwent such massive psychological changes that they were transformed, for military purposes, into homosexuals after a few hours of contemplating the worth of the war. Those who reworked the law to their advantage were not castigated for their actions. In fact, they benefited occupationally by the decrease in the competitive labor force. Only the honest were, and are, made to pay. It is hypocritical to punish those' persons who had the courage of their convictions while persons with less integrity and candor prosper. Yet, this is the plight of the evaders and deserters who for moral reasons chose to spend years in other countries or even prison. There is the often heard cry of outrage equating amnesty with dishonoring the war dead. We offer our sympathy to those who lost dear ones in the conflict and to those who were maimed physically or emotionally. But to continue to punish Americans, who recognized the injustice of the Vietnam War, on the strength of memories or revenge serves no purpose. An unconditional amnesty would have been a more just alternative but, obviously, it would have been dangerous politically for Mr. Ford. The declaration of a full, free, and absolute pardon for the noncombative victims of the war is not in the offing so the American people should accept the present plan wholeheartedly. If Richard Milhous Nixon has suffered enough for embezzling the integrity of the United States, surely men condemned to banishment for their moral convictions are worthy of rejoining society. not-so-dista- pre-inducti- nt on Each month . air les Save your b them In once a month tied in a The work the mining company is doing in the Judge Tunnel to secure that source of water for the city is also progressing very well, Price said.
