Page THOSE WILD TALES! Division of Wildlife Resources Hunter Safety Trainer A. Lee Robertson heard a story several hunting seasons ago that has been tossed around from sportsman to sportsman in Utah over the years. Robertson had stopped for gasoline in a small Utah town. The service station attendant, not knowing his customer was a Division employee, told Robertson about those Division airplanes that have been herding the game animals away from the hunters. Robertson questioned, Now do you really believe that? "Sure, replied the attendant, My uncle saw the green Fish and Game airplanes in the act. There are similar stories of Division tossing cherry bombs near elk to frighten them away from hunting parties. Both tales are wild. Their origins are a mystery to the Division. Even more mysterious, though are the nonexistent green Division airplanes. Neither of the Divisions aircraft is green nor is there an insignia identifying the agency. Most importantly, though, point out biologists, is the paradoxical result such practices would bring. We have reasons for biological hunting. Scattering and moving game herds would be completely said Assistant Game illogical, Management Chief hunts. This tactic is seldom successful because herds move frequently. We have no control over this unless harassment is involved. The Division encourages persons who see aerial harassment of game animals to report it so those who take part in such acts The earth cannot be recycled. Enjoy it! Then leave it as you found it. can be prosecuted. Under the Wildlife Resources Code of Utah, all harassment of wildlife is a misdemeanor. Homer Stapley. Hunting is a tool to keep herds in balance with their food supply. Each year, hundreds of hours are spent collecting data on forage consumed by game and the amount left to carry them through the winter, and sex and age classifications. Hunting seasons are based on this information, he explained. Just as cattle and sheep men must market part of their herds in keeping with available food, game managers must see that game herds are also culled to eliminate starvation through the critical winter months. If the Division were to arbitrarily drive game from one area to another, the whole point of the hunt would be lost and the animals would starve. Such a waste would be irrational in the eyes of the Division. (Remember Division personnel hunt, too. Stapley added.) Minimum cost for flying Division aircraft-pil- ot and MMOWtliMff 1.
