When starting this book you may feel that each section could stand 'alone as a short novelette, but soon you will see file stories start to build upon one another. Michener first takes you back to prehistoric times to introduce you to file earliest inhabitants of the area: the graceful diplodocus, file tiny titanothqre, file ferocious tyrannosaurus and others. In collecting coups with him you see your first white man, a beaver trader named Pasquinel. Traveling among the Indians with Pasquinel, you meet explorers, military men and settlers.
