Show The Deseret Sampler, Fri., December 6, 1974 A Squad Leader's View Chaplains Corner Summer Focus On People Job Deadline By James Higdon Christ , Man-Go- d By Chaplain (LTC) Austin DiBenedetto Some two thousand years ago there lived one show influence on die world is unique in history. He did not live in one of the great .centers of civilization, but in a remote comer of the world. He was not bom with die material advantages that wealth and social position can give; He was born in a stable. He did not have a long career, not one which carried him into many countries; His span of life was only thirty-thre- e years; His activity was confined to an area of a few hundred miles. His life did not end on a note of triumph; He suffered the shameful death of crucifixion. Yet today, twenty centuries later, this person is worshipped by hundreds of millions in every part of the world as the Savior of mankind. Through the centuries since His death millions have galdly renounced all that the human heart holds dear - home, family, friends, and tidies - to carry His name to other corners of die earth. He is loved throughout the wold as no other man has been loved. His cross, once a symbol of criminal death, is now displayed triumphantly atop churches throughout the world, a symbol of hope and love. His teachings have humanized and ennobled men and nations. What is it that makes Jesus Christ unique among all the men in history? What is it that accounts for die influence He has had and still has on the world? Hie answer is, of course, that Jesus Christ was not merely a great teacher and religious leader; He is the Son of Cod. He is die Redeemer promised by God, who brought salvation to the human race, who ransomed man by his Death on the cross. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life." It is by union with Him that men receive the life of grace. It is through the acceptance of His teachings that men And salvation. It is by submission to His rule that men find the freedom of die sons of Cod. Jesus said to his dedples, Behold, I am with you all days, even unto die consummation of the world Although He ascended into heaven, and we can no longer see and hear Him as did his Mother and his contemporaries, Jesus in His great love for us remains with us. He promises: Where two or three are gathered together in Mya name, I am with you." He continues to give life and truth and guidance to those who are Joined to Him." The way to Join Christ is through grace, prayer, worship, and obedience to Cods commandments. If we use these things, we will be Joined to Him, and in return He will bless abundantly each of us and those whom we love. Letters You Tell Us To All Movie Goers: I agree at least in principle with the movie goer who wrote the letter to the Deseret Sampler concerning noise in the theater. We are trying to stop the distractions and we need your help. The Armed Forces Motion Picture Service has a twofold purpose. First is to provide entertainment for its patrons and second to generate funds for continuance of the motion picture program. Our emphasis is on the first purpose by choice but the second cannot be ignored of necessity. Hence the cut off of 13 years of age for unaccompanied attendance at evening performances. Heres what we are doing At the November 24th evening performance of S.P.Y.S. 20 to 25 children 12 years of age and under not accompanied by adults were turned away. We will continue this practice. After the box office closes, a check win be made of child behavior by the manager . The Armys first vital link in its Chain of Command is the Squad Leader. He is the liaison between individuals in his squad and the Company command, and is the first to hear, review and council members of his squad about their problems, gripes, and duties. A dynamite question to ask any soldier is what he feels are main problems facing his Army today. BASICALLY," sayd HHC Squad Leader SP5 Greg Hors-maits communications. Ive seen guys who really nave it in for somebody, and becaue they foil to communicate, resort to using his rank to get the guy. I dont think the Army can afford this type of thing. Greg Horsman has long sought to keep what lines of communication we have die in the Army today open. At. Ft. Carson Colorado Is was an active member on both the EMC (Enlisted Mens Council) and the RHC (Racial Harmony Council). He is presently an active member of DPGs EMC as welL While relating his views about Dugway, Horsman shows almost unequaled enthusiasm. This may be partly due to die fact that he hails from Babbit, Minnesota, a small town sporting a population of 2,900. I Hlce-i- t here for one thing because of the excellent facilities available to everybody, says Greg. He cites the excellent ' athletic equipment as one good example of this. "You just don't find that at every post Being an outdoorsman at heart, Greg finds Dugway s wide open spaces and naturally dean environment much to his liking. Aside from the fact that we are more or less isolated here, its not such a bad post, states Greg. Gregs other active interests include officiating intramural basketball in his time, and paying regular visits to the golf course when he gets die chance. An avid Minnesota Viking footbidf fan, Greg thinks the Rams have a good chance this year but it's hard to say because the seasons got a few games left yet. He says ms home state Vikings have been stronger in past seasons. IN MANY WAYS Greg and his small family here represent the many families in the Army today. He, his wife Charlotte, and son David, are presently awaiting a new addition to the family, which Greg hopes will be his second son. Its hard to say what a man needs to survive in this Army, the old Squad leader, 'but working together is says probably the best way of course. We have got to change with the changes in order to adapt Not squad by Squad, but all of us regardless of rank together and at mice, says Greg. In my squad, I try and realize a guys point of view, but I expect him to try and see mine too. The best way to serve your country is in an organization relatively stable and problem Tree. By adapting we can hopefully grow better with a growing Army. -- SC S' .
