Show The Deseret Sampler, Friday, October 11, 1974 o College Plan Program AHEAD HUMAN GOALS Announced .j THE ADVANCEMENT OF HUMAN DIGNITY Army education benefits got one better with a new college program recently announced by the Army Recruiting Command. Recruiters call it Project AHEAD and advise ' that it is a cooperating program between die Army and colleges nationwide. THE PARTICIPATING colleges, 1000 are targeted nationwide, are to allow all active duty men and women to enroll upon enlistment or at any time during their active service. There will be little or no charge for enrollment and the college will provide each individual a counseling service and a centralized transcribing point for credits obtained at other schools. As an example, a soldier at Dugway could enroll at the University of Iowa, which is a participating college. Credits earned by attending BYU, through the post education center, would be placed on the individual's University of Iowa transcript. Additionally, credits will be placed on foe Iowa transcript for service experience such as basic training, advanced individual training and other service schools and experiences. Iowa will award credits ob- tained through the .College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. Up to two years of college credit can be earned by passing CLEP examinations. The University of Iowa is only one example of many fine colleges nationwide that has or will become affiliated with Project mm . AHEAD. ITS A NO strings progaccording to recruiting officials. Active duty personnel do not incur additional service time by enrolling. The service man or woman can use tuition assistance funds, his or her GI Bill (after 180 days of active duty) to pay foe costs. PROJECT AHEAD is a program with mutual benefits. Under the traditional college program, Army personnel, par- ticularly the careerist, had difficulty in accumulating credits earned at various colleges and transferring them to one college. With Project AHEAD, credits are accepted, tuition is paid through tuition assistance and foe Cl Bill while the soldier gains job experience and receives a pay check. Colleges benefit because of increased enrollment under Project AHEAD. It is anticipated that service personnel who are enrolled in Project AHEAD and who are making educational progress will enroll full time after separation from the Army. Many colleges who are caught in foe squeeze between decreasing enrollments and revenue and raising costs see Project AHEAD as a valuable opportunity to attract mature and financially responsible students to their campus. The Army benefits strongly under Project AHEAD. Studies report that educational opportunity is foe major reason for enlistmenL Project Army AHEAD capitalizes on this with a highly vi sable program which has education community support. The Army will be able, by offering Project AHEAD, to increase its enlistees who are college oriented, retain and increase foe education level of personnel and benefit ' from the overall image of being strongly oriented toward ram, Write a Winning Letter Freedoms Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nonsec- tarian, independent foundation, is located at Valley Forge, Pa.
