Show Marine Corps amphibious vehicle operations conducted at Dugway Dugway Proving Ground facilities are being used for the operational testing and decontamination of the LVTP7 amphibious vehicle in a chemical environment. Operations involving the Marine Corps new amphibious landing vehicle have been underway at Dugway since early September. A DETACHMENT of 11 Marines from the 3d Amphibious Tractor Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif., have been running the LVTP7 (Landing Vehicle, Tracked, Personnel, Model 7) through its paces at a DPG desert test site. The LVTP7 is a fully tracked, aluminum armored, diesel powered amphibian which is propelled by tracks on land and water jets afloat. The vehicle is operated by a crew of three Marines and has a payload capacity of either 25 combat- - loaded troops or 10, (XX) pounds of cargo. The amphibious tractor (amtrac) is designed primarily to lie used as an armored personnel carrier on land and an amphibious vehicle carrying troops to shore from transport ships. It is armed with the M85 machine gun in an turret. The aluminum armor provides ballistic protection against small arms fire, flash burn and shrapnel. OTHER CAPABILITIES of the amtrac include the ability to negotiate a plunging wave, climb a 60 trench. forward side cross an eight-focent and or slope per It can attain top speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour on land and 8.4 mph afloat. The LVTP7 is the first of a family of three new Marine amphibians to become operational. The personnel carrier precedes the command communications tractor and recovery vehicle versions, which are presently deployed with Fleet Marine Force Commands and the Reserves. Black Americans in history Dorie Miller, Naval hero Done Miller was waiting tables in the jiuiior officers mess when the call to battle stations was sounded altoard the USs West Virginia AMERICA WAS AT peace, but this was no drill The date was Dec. 7, 1941, and the West Virginia lay at anchor in Pearl Harbor. In the next few hours. Miller, Black messman first class, was to enjoy his finest hour and to win fame as one of World War Us first heroes. By the time Miller reached the deck, torpedoes already had ripped into the liattleships Arizona and Oklahoma anchored nearby. Then bomlxs smashed into the deck of Miller's vessel. One stnick the bridge and mortally wounded the West Virginia's commander. Knocked down by the explosion. Miller scrambled luck to his feet and carried the injured officer to cover. Then, as a hail of bullets laced the battleship's deck. Miller raced hack to an unmanned machine gun he had never been trained in the use pf the weapon. Official Navy policy at that time relegated black soldiers exclusively to the messmans branch for the "best interests of general ship . electro-hydraul- ic ' 10-fo- ot ' ot V .h-- '. ' ' ' efficiency. J 1$ j DESPITE THIS, Miller blasted away at the Japanese and before the battle had ended shot down four enemy ' Done Miller was awarded the Navys highest honor, the Navy Cross, for his heroism that day. The citation from Admiral Chester W. Nimitz commended him for distinguished devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and disregard of his personal safety during an attack." It was a heady moment for Miller who was born the son of a sharecropper in Waco, Tex., in 1919. MILLER ATTENDED Moore high school in that central Texas city and distinguished himself as star fullback on the school football team. At 19, he got a yen to see the world and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. At that time. Pearl Ilarlxir was just the name of another exotic port. Miller was approaching the end of his first hitch when the Japanese swept in over the horizon to launch their attack. AFTER IT WAS over, his drip sunk and the fleet crippled. Miller found himself assigned to another ship, again as a messman. In December 1943, Miller, now a mess attendant third class, was aboard the aircraft carrier Lise om be Bay when it was torpedoed and sunk in the South Pacific. He was listed as killed in action.
