Show Gliding in Europe Recently returned from Europe and assigned to the information office is SPC Roy Kessell who lives at 498 Brook Ave., in Tooele. SFC KESSEL was assigned to SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe) and was NCOIC of the photographic section. In addition to his official duties SFC Kessel was active in his church (LDS) and a memlier of the SHAPE gliding dub where he qualified as a glider pilot having made over a hundred powerless flights, some in excess of one hmir. SFC Kessel reports that gliding is a very popular sport in Europe with England and Gerof many leading in the nuinlier tlie in Instructors planes flying. club were English and German air force people with many years experience in all types of flying. CL1D1NC, or more properly, soaring in a sailplane is flying as the birds do by using rising air currents to maintain or gain altitude without the use of jiower. In the case of the SHAPE gliding club the planes are launched by a winch powered by a Oldsinohile Rocket engine drivof ing two spools of 15(X) meters cable The steel cable. inch 18 is attached to the planes and the winch pulls in the cable at alxnit 80 miles per hour which pulls the plane into the air much as a lxiy pulls his kite by running. At a height of about 1000 feet the cable is released and the glider pilot liegins his search for rising air or thermals. If no lift is found he returns to his take off point and lands usually in alxnit 6 minutes. When lift is found flights can lie extended to hours 5 hours lieing fairly common. THE SHAPE gliding club is an international club with many nationalities as memliers. There were American, English, German, Belgian, Norwegian, Canadian and many other of the fifteen NATO nation's people, Ixith men and women, who worked together to enjoy the sport. Six aircraft made up the fleet of planes with two trainers, one advanced trainer, place single two hi$i performance sailplanes, and one slope soaring plane from England. Except for the English Swallow", all other planes were of Germun manufacture. Now that SFC Kessel is home again he plans to qualify for a power plane license and intends to build his own airplane.
