Show Friday, December 4, 1959 THE AMERICAN STATESMAN Where Are The Conservatives? YES, BUT! Sif (feciye Stardnunt During the question and answer session, following a meeting a few months ago, the following question and statement was made. Q: The speakers have discussed taxes and foreign aid and more taxes and I agree BUT dont you think it would be better if our tax structure was just reorganized? Certainly, we must continue with our foreign aid to our friends and I cant help but wonder if we are wise to question the wisdom of our elected representatives who should know best We have only discussed repeal of the income tax amendment It is easier to forget all the dozens of additional taxes. There are excise taxes, such as so- A: cial security, taxes upon luxuries, those taxes which were enacted just as war time measures. Mr. Boardman We have gasoline taxes, corporation taxes, entertainment taxes, liquor taxes and transportation taxes and taxes upon the taxes upon which we have previously paid taxes. Certainly the entire tax structure should be reorganized, AFTER the proposed 23rd Amendment is passed. In the matter of foreign aid lets first examine your remark about the wisdom of , our elected representatives. You will admit, I believe, that those men and women who represent us in Washington, D.C., the people who are also responsible for law and order in D.C. should know whats going on in our Capitol city. In this year of 1959, it is hardly safe for a woman to travel over the streets in the Capitol alone at night The illegitimate birth rate is among the highest in the country. This situation has become worse during the past seven years of the Eisenhower administration. Take a look at the Job our elected representatives have done on their, new office buildings. The expense for each of the two buildings passed the original estimates a couple of years ago and the buildings are not actually completed yet The new House Office building, with six room and three bath suites for the members of the House of Representatives, cost the taxpayers just about one million dollars per Congressman. What kind of wisdom and sincere desire for economy is evidenced by these facts? - There is nor evidence to indicate that we have gained even one friend through our foreign aid. At no other in this century has the prestige of the United States been at such a low ebb. Greece has been moving more and more to the left ever since the United States saved her from communism. The Scandinavian countries are socialist-neutraliMorocco doesnt mind taking a few of our tax dollars providing they can do so without assuming any obligation towards our country. Certainly we have loaned tax dollars to Poland, to Tito and his government and to the Communist Hungarian government Do you think we bought friendship? Every possible excuse for foreign aid has been made. It was important in our defense against communism but we make so called cultural exchange treaties with the enemy against which we are supposedly building our defenses. Foreign aid has been utilized as a stimulus to business, which means we finance everything, then pay ourselves after the bureaucratic cut from the top of the pile. Our national debt grows larger every day. But its only money, say the left wing economists. Isnt it peculiar how the left wingers and socialists who deprecate the importance of money spend all their time trying to steal the money from those who earn st it? Our country is in desperate need of hundreds of bright, new brooms to sweep the dusty beggars of socialism out of Washington, D.C. and to motivate a speedy return to decent govern- ment How many supposedly concerned Americans have started to search for those new brooms, in the shape and image of respectable men and women who will sacrifice a few years of their lives for the good of the country, to save their children and grandchildren from the slavery which is socialism? How many Republicans are looking for new, shining brooms who will fight to redeem the pledges of a once proud political entity, so it will be restored to respectability? How many Democrats are eagerly searching for men and women to take their party out of the abysmal mediocrity of a socialist philosophy which has not the courage to say we are socialists? How many independents actually give a damn for independence? I was asked the other day, Where are the conservatives? That is easy to answer. Many live in Montvale, New Jersey; Torrance, Canoga Park, Santa Ana, California; they write letters from; Baltimore, Maryland; Miami, Florida; Urbana, Illinois; Richmond, Indiana and New Orleans, La. ' Then I began to wonder,. would these people living in cities and towns all over America, like to meet other conservatives who live in their own city and state, across the street and down in the next block? Maybe they would like to get together to discuss ideas over a pot of coffee and a piece of cake. No big party movement, no big idea in mind, just getting to know other folks who believe that men can solve their own problems better than the government can. If you would like to meet other conservatives in your area, if you would like to exchange ideas or letters, write me and give me permission to give others in your area your name and address so that you can get together. Maybe you will never discuss politics together. Maybe you will play a few rubbers of bridge or enjoy small talk in your living rooms. This could turn into a most enjoyable social group whose members will try to find out just who are the conservatives in their block, city, and state. .Then when the time comes that a bill is introduced in the state legislature to have all fire arms registered, or a bill to have all home owners pay a rental income tax on their own homes . . . then they can act as a responsible, informed group. What can one man do to fight for what he believes? Send me permission to give others your name and address and you will find that others who believe as you do want to get together and be heard. Well what do you think? Drop me a line. J. Dohn Lewis, co American Statesman, 345 South State SL, Salt Lake City, Utah.
